Holiday apartment in Hilvarenbeek: Nature, Routes and Culture
Hilvarenbeek can be explored via official, well-marked hiking, cycling and horse-riding routes. These paths run in and around Hilvarenbeek, Diessen, Haghorst, Esbeek, Biest-Houtakker and Baarschot via a junction system. The named routes include the Jan van Gorp Route, which is 15.5 kilometres in total: 10 kilometres are allocated to the cycling route and 5.5 kilometres to the walking route. The Jan van Gorp cycling and walking route starts at the Vrijthof in Hilvarenbeek.
Routes
The horse-riding route network can also be planned using junctions: riders can put together their route in advance. Within the municipal boundaries of Hilvarenbeek, the network offers riders and carriage drivers an 88-kilometre route. Another route runs through Annanina’s Rust. The nature trail starts at the information board at the entrance; parking is available behind Hakvoortseweg 14 in Hilvarenbeek.
At Landgoed De Utrecht, walking and cycling are permitted on existing roads and paths, and several signposted routes also run through the estate. The Andreas Schotel Museum is also part of an art walking route, which is either 3 or 10 kilometres long. Along this route are life-size sculptures and easels displaying various scenes in nature.
Culture
The Beekse Toren, the Gothic tower of Sint Petrus Church and a historic monument in Hilvarenbeek, stands on the Vrijthof. Climbing the Beekse Toren provides access to a view from the observation floor in the 75-metre-high tower spire. The Vrijthof was formerly called De Mèrt; activities have been held there since the Middle Ages.
The Monument Route through the historic village centre leads to eleven stones within a one-kilometre radius of the Vrijthof. Texts, historic photographs and QR codes at the respective stops provide information about the monuments. The route is approximately 3 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Vrijthof. Another discovery near the village is the Spreekwoordenroute Hilvarenbeek: using a route booklet, it leads to ten locations where participants solve a task at each one.
The Andreas Schotel Museum presents changing exhibitions by the Rotterdam graphic artist Andreas Schotel and offers etching workshops. Museum De Dorpsdokter depicts historic medical practice rooms from village medicine, including rooms for a doctor, dentist, pharmacist, physiotherapist, midwife, chemist and first aid. Johannes Goropius Becanus, also known as Jan van Gorp, is also connected with the history of Hilvarenbeek; he was born in Hilvarenbeek in the 16th century as a “child prodigy”.
Nature
Landgoed De Utrecht consists mainly of coniferous forest, heathland with the Flaes and Goor fens, as well as an observation tower and the beekdal van de Reusel. The Rovertsche Heide, Landgoed De Utrecht and the stream valleys belong to the Kempenland-West Natura 2000 area.
The green hairstreak, common lizard and skylark occur on the Rovertsche Heide. There is also woodland there, and the area can be explored on foot.
Family attractions
At Beekse Bergen Safari Park, visitors can explore the grounds on foot, by bus, by boat or on a car safari. More than 100 different animal species can be seen along the safari routes. Speelland Beekse Bergen is a family-friendly swimming lake in nature with water-based activities and various attractions, including the Aquashuttle and play equipment.
Local life
Molen De Doornboom is the only working grain mill in Hilvarenbeek. Visitors can see how milling works using wind power. The mill processes spelt and wheat grown in the region; the village bakers use them to make various baked goods.
Museumbrouwerij De Roos offers guided tours and an audio guide in Dutch, English, German and French. Beer is also available there in the tasting room.
