Diessen combines impressive ecclesiastical art, ancient pilgrimage history and varied paths through a predominantly rural landscape. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Diessen, you can plan your holiday days around different interests: with culture centred on the Willibrorduskerk, a short art walk, a child-friendly circuit or longer tours by bicycle, on horseback and by horse-drawn carriage.

Churches, nativity scenes and pilgrimage history

The Willibrorduskerk and its tower date from the early 16th century and are considered a good example of Kempish Gothic architecture. The priest’s choir is the oldest part of the church and dates from approximately the end of the 14th century. This gives the church several historical layers that can be experienced together during a cultural stay in Diessen. The view of the church therefore leads from the late-medieval priest’s choir to the Kempish Gothic architecture of the early 16th century.

The nativity scenes are also among the church’s special details. The Christmas nativity scene in the Sint-Willibrorduskerk is more than 100 years old and was acquired around 1900. Beneath the tower of the Sint-Willibrorduskerk there is also a nativity scene with figures made of white clay from 1950. Every year, Jong Nederland Diessen publishes the Christmas nativity scene route in the DiessenApp.

The Willibrordusput is located next to the church. The well attracted many pilgrims in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its water was believed to have healing properties for the “ailment of Willibrord”. The combination of the church building, nativity tradition and well makes Diessen’s religious history tangible at several specific locations.

Walks and cycling routes for different days

For families with young children, the approximately 50-minute walk along the Muizenpad is one way to explore Diessen. The trail is designed for children aged 0 to 6. Those who want to combine art and exercise can include the approximately 4 km Kunstwandeling 3 art walk through Diessen.

For a longer tour, Kunstfietstocht 1 is available. This approximately 24 km cycling route leads through Diessen. At approximately 24 km, Kunstfietstocht 1 forms a separate cycling section for which you can allow the appropriate amount of time in your daily schedule. The different lengths of the walking and cycling routes make it easier for you to plan between a short discovery tour and a more extensive active day, without having to view culture and landscape separately.

Ponds, meadows and the rural surroundings

The Leemsputten are now fishing ponds. They were created from clay-rich soils that were previously excavated for brick production. The transition from former clay extraction to today’s fishing ponds connects the past and present at the Leemsputten.

The Van dun Heikaant nor ut Broek route leads through the rural surroundings of Baarschot, Diessen and Haghorst. It runs mostly along unpaved paths and is suitable for riders and horse-drawn carriage drivers. One section passes through the Diessens Broek, an important meadow bird area with pastures and hay meadows.
