Holiday apartment in Someren: Nature, Routes and History

A distinctive landscape area is the Strabrechtse Heide, a nature reserve covering approximately 1,500 hectares. In 2006, it was designated a Natura 2000 site together with part of the Kleine Dommel valley under the name Strabrechtse Heide & Beuven. The encroachment of grasses on the heathland is reduced by grazing with a herd of Kempisch heideschaap sheep, mowing and sod cutting.

Nature

Several routes provide access to the various landscapes. The Beuvenroute starts on the outskirts of Lierop in the hamlet of Moorsel and offers a short 5-kilometre variant and a long 10-kilometre variant. The Witvenroute passes through an area with coniferous forests as well as extensive fen and heathland landscapes, where Scottish Highland cattle graze. The Keelvenroute is a hike through forests, heathland and fen landscapes in the Het Keelven nature development area.

For cycling, there is the 30-kilometre Strabrechtse-Heide cycling route, which runs through the Strabrechtse Heide and its surroundings. In the meadow behind Molen Den Evert, you can see, among other things, wild bees, butterflies, wildflowers, plants and old grain varieties.

Paths and Exercise

The Allemanspad is a fully paved walking path with 3-kilometre and 5-kilometre variants starting from the Natuurpoort Vennenhorst car park. As a paved walking path, it is particularly suitable for wheelchairs as well as children's and walking pushchairs. The Toeristisch Informatiepunt Someren provides free maps for cycling, walking and mountain-biking routes and provides information about events, activities and leisure opportunities.

The signposted Monumentenroute 1 also combines exercise and local history. It is 25 kilometres long and leads to historic monuments and places of interest in Someren-Dorp and Lierop. The starting point is on Wilhelminaplein in the centre of Someren.

Culture and History

The Koepelkerk H. Naam Jezus in Lierop was built in 1892 in the Neo-Romanesque style and has been a national heritage monument since 1976. The hamlet of Boomen in Lierop includes five farmhouses classified as national heritage monuments. Boomen itself is a protected village landscape and is considered a typical example of the development of an esch or farm-field hamlet.

Molen Den Evert is a semi-open post mill with a museum displaying mill-related objects and tools. The Someren-Lierop area also contains settlement remains from the Palaeolithic, as well as burial mounds and an urnfield from the Late Bronze Age.

The Dennenlust hiding camp was established in 1943 to provide accommodation during the Second World War for students from The Hague who were being sought by German authorities. In the Moorsel area of Lierop, the former Dennenlust hiding camp has been reconstructed.

Local Life

In Someren, a market is held on Wednesdays in even-numbered weeks from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wilhelminaplein in front of the town hall. Activities organised in Someren throughout the year include the Kennedymars. It takes place every year on the first complete weekend in July and is an 80-kilometre march through Someren and the surrounding area.

Family Time

De Diepsteeckel is a family-friendly outdoor swimming pool in Someren. The leisure pool has a paddling pool and a slide. Speeltuin Prinses Irene includes a small petting zoo with alpacas, rabbits, dwarf goats and deer.

Speeltuin Prinses Irene can be reserved for children's parties, school trips, family days and neighbourhood celebrations. There is ample parking at and around Speeltuin Prinses Irene in Someren-Eind.

Someren is located on the A67 and can be reached from Eindhoven via the A67 towards Venlo, taking exit 35.
