Steenbergen is one of the fortified towns along the Zuiderwaterlinie. Restored bastions are visible as historic features, and the historic line moat can still be clearly identified. The remains of Steenbergen Fortress were part of both the Zuiderwaterlinie and the West-Brabantse Waterlinie. This brings together visible fortification remains in the town and expansive landscapes.

History

At Fort Henricus, visitors can climb the observation tower and explore the fort on foot together with its five associated bastions. Information panels at the fort explain how the complex functioned. Another historic connection can be found at the Benedensas lock: during the Belgian Uprising around 1831, it was an important strategic point.

Nature

The natural surroundings of Steenbergen include mudflats, creeks, channels and rugged vegetation. In the Dintelse Gorzen nature area, the soil alternates between fresh and salt water; this creates diverse vegetation. Sea aster and glasswort, which thrive in salty conditions, continue to grow on the low mudflats.

The Dintelse Gorzen can be reached from Natuurpoort Benedensas via a self-service lock. By public transport, take the bus from Bergen op Zoom railway station to De Heense Molen, then continue on foot for half an hour. In the Dintelse Gorzen area, the Benedensas walking route crosses bridges, follows ditches and passes over tree trunks.

Routes

Several paths provide access to the surrounding area in different ways. The “De Kromme Hoek Om” circular route is 9 kilometres long and leads through the countryside around Kruisland. The Blauwe Sluis route is 25 kilometres long and runs through the polder area of Kruisland, Steenbergen and Dinteloord. The Eendrachtroute leads to the most beautiful places in the municipality of Steenbergen.

The Merijntje-Gijzen cycling route also combines landscape and local culture. It leads to places where exterior shots for the popular television series “Merijntje Gijzen’s Jeugd” were filmed in 1973. The route can begin at the A.M. de Jongmuseum, by the statue of Merijntje Gijzen standing in front of it. It then leads through the polders of Nieuw-Vossemeer and De Heen.

Culture

The A.M. de Jongmuseum is one of the writers’ homes in the Netherlands; it also houses the collection of the Heemkundekring. Steenbergen is also home to the Gummaruskerk, which was built to a design by P.J.H. Cuypers. The name De Holle Roffel is derived from a type of plane from the 18th century that was used to work the roughest parts of wood.

Molen Assumburg is an octagonal grain mill with a gallery on a round stone base. The mill has been set up as a mill museum. Visitors can view mill models, photographs and historical objects there; from the gallery, they can look out over the polders.

The De Klokgevel Museum is housed in a municipal Rijksmonument dating from 1737. It is only partially accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. As the Koffie- & Theemuseum De Klokgevel, it displays a private collection of more than 3,000 tea packets and 4,000 coffee packets.
