Natural Landscape and Local History

Udenhout reveals its distinctive character where landscape and local history intertwine. De Brand is a low-lying area where peat and hay were once harvested. In Van Gogh National Park, De Brand forms an important link between nature, water and cultural history. De Brand thus connects the former harvesting of peat and hay with the park’s nature, water and cultural history.

Since 1990, the Erfgoedcentrum ’t Schoor has focused on the history of Udenhout and Biezenmortel. The centre features exhibits on Udenhout’s brickworks and dairy factories. It also covers monasteries, the guild, healthcare and education.

Church, Brickworks and Historic Paths

The Sint Lambertuskerk in Udenhout is a Rijksmonument and part of the Sint Lambertuskerk complex. The Steenfabriek D’n Oven was founded in 1890. The church and the Steenfabriek represent different forms of Udenhout’s architectural and economic heritage. The founding year 1890 gives the Steenfabriek D’n Oven a clear historical time reference.

The Bosch en Duin hiking route passes medieval boundary embankments. Residents built these embankments to protect their fields and pastures from blowing sand. In this way, the route combines exercise with a concrete insight into how the landscape and agriculture were managed in the past. The boundary embankments therefore remain closely connected with the former fields and pastures.

For the “Hiking with Boots Along the Zandleij” trail, rubber boots are recommended, as De Brand can be quite wet even in summer. The choice of footwear on this tour is therefore directly linked to the conditions in De Brand.

Regional Excursions and Local Products

At Boerderij Sprankenhof, the focus is on a pick-your-own garden with organic fruit and vegetables. Its agricultural character therefore stands apart from the historic buildings and hiking trails. The pick-your-own garden adds an agricultural focus alongside the historical themes.
