Geertruidenberg is a historic fortified town on the edge of the Biesbosch, Europe’s largest freshwater tidal wetland. Four harbours are located near the historic centre, where boats can moor.

History

Geertruidenberg is a historic fortified town with fortifications, town walls and numerous monuments; the townscape has been protected as a national heritage site since 1970. The Geertruidskerk is a prominent testament to the town’s long history. Its history dates back to 660; the oldest tuff foundations date from around 1100. Fort Lunet was built between 1837 and 1839 as a defensive structure to protect the Donge and the Breda–Gorinchem road running alongside it.

At Museum De Roos, the ecclesiastical and secular history of Geertruidenberg is presented with models illustrating the development of the town’s fortifications. The basement contains archaeological finds as well as an exhibition about the Zuiderwaterlinie. A new temporary exhibition is also on display there twice a year. The Bergsche Battery provides another historical highlight, presenting a historical spectacle in the municipality of Geertruidenberg every summer. A railway line is also one of the town’s outstanding cultural and historical features: in 2013, it received a Europa Nostra Award, confirming its great cultural and historical value.

Nature and water

Geertruidenberg lies on the edge of the Biesbosch, Europe’s largest freshwater tidal wetland. Visitors can explore the nature area by quiet boat or hike there, observing beavers, otters and eagles, among other wildlife. From Fort Lunet, De Biesbosch can be reached by boat within half an hour. The combination of the fortified landscape and the freshwater tidal area is evident both in the historic structures and on the water.

Koningspark has special fitness equipment, tree trunks for playing, a play meadow and a water pump with a watercourse. The park complements the paths and historic sites with its own public area featuring various stations and play elements.

Paths and routes

The Toeristisch Informatiepunt TIP Geertruidenberg is the starting point for numerous guided tours as well as hiking and cycling routes, and it also houses Museum De Roos. From there, a three-kilometre walk through Geertruidenberg begins, taking approximately one hour and starting at the VVV office on the Markt.

For longer distances, the 290-kilometre Zuiderwaterlinie Wandelpad with 13 stages is available. The seventh stage runs from Oosterhout via Geertruidenberg to Raamsdonk and is just over 22 kilometres long. Shorter paths also explore the fortified town: the “Wandelroute langs water en vestingwerken” route is 5.4 kilometres long, follows a node network and runs along the fortifications, the historic market square and various works of art in Geertruidenberg.

The 10.5-kilometre “Wandelen langs kerken” route runs through Geertruidenberg, Raamsdonk and Raamsdonksveer and follows the hiking node network. Another hiking route follows the Donge for 6.5 kilometres; it can be extended by 3 kilometres and follows the Brabant West hiking node network.

Several places and themes can also be combined by bicycle. The Terrassenroute Geertruidenberg is 20 kilometres long and runs through Geertruidenberg, Raamsdonksveer and Raamsdonk, with stops at cafés and terraces along the way. Bike & Bite is a culinary cycling experience in the municipality of Geertruidenberg with several dining stops offering dishes made from regional produce. Visitors can also book guided cycling tours with city guides, leading to picturesque locations and historic sites.

Activities

The Spreekwoordenroute Geertruidenberg is a four-kilometre activity lasting approximately two hours. Participants solve riddles, collect clues and crack the code to a safe.
