The old heathland cultivation areas of Bergeijk mainly form semi-open agricultural landscapes. Long and short sightlines alternate with avenues, groups of trees, hedgerows and rows of trees. These landscapes are particularly suitable for route-based recreation.
Nature
The nature trail at De Plateaux is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. One of the distinctive aquatic landscapes is De Liskes: the area comprises 13 pools and is the largest complex in the Parelsnoer van Wijers. At the main dyke and the birdwatching hide at De Liskes, birdwatchers can look out for Eurasian teal, great egrets and bluethroats. The birdwatching hide offers extensive views in all directions across interconnected ponds and is one of the stops on the De Dansende Katten van Bergeijk cycling route.
Hiking and cycling
Several routes provide access to the various landscape elements. The 3.3-kilometre Vloeiweiden hiking route near Bergeijk leads through woodland, heathland and the culturally and historically significant Vloeiweiden. The Panoramapad Bergeijk is a 7.3-kilometre hike through woodland, heathland, fen landscapes and Vloeiweiden; it starts and ends in Bergeijk. The Ganzenbroek hike is a 3.5-kilometre walk through the valleys of the Keersop and the Beekloop, through forests and agricultural land, and along old sandy paths.
The area also offers longer historic routes: the 26-kilometre Walking Route 1: Bergeijk-Waalre section of the Liberation Route Brabant follows the first part of the route taken by the liberators on Dutch soil. For cyclists, the De Bergeijkse Brugleuningen cycling route passes ten unique bridges that highlight themes from nature and local stories.
Culture and history
The Poort der Bevrijding in Bergeijk is a granite memorial stone bearing an inscription, the municipal coat of arms of Bergeijk, and the emblems of the Prinses Irene Brigade and the Household Cavalery. It commemorates Operation Market Garden, the Allied offensive from 17 to 26 September 1944. The monument stands at the De Barrier border crossing in Bergeijk, where the first liberators passed by on 11 September 1944.
The history of architecture and design is also connected to specific locations. The De Ploeg weaving mill in Bergeijk was designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld. Cultuurhuis Bergeijk presents the design heritage of Gerrit Rietveld, Mien Ruys, the De Ploeg weaving mill and Martin Visser, and organises exhibitions and guided tours at various locations in Bergeijk associated with Gerrit Rietveld and Mien Ruys. A guided Rietveld safari in Bergeijk can be booked with an advance reservation of at least two weeks.
The De Sigarenmaker Museum presents the history and processing of tobacco, as well as the interior of an old tobacco shop. In Luyksgestel stands the De Deen wind-powered grain mill, which was built in 1839 and restored to working order in March 2011.
Baking tradition and visitor information
Bakkerijmuseum De Grenswachter is open to the public, offers demonstrations in a wood-fired oven dating from 1850, and organises workshops in which visitors make Brabantse Worstenbroodjes, Kruimelvlaai or bread themselves.
