Discover Luyksgestel – Holiday Rental, Mill Culture and Border History
Luyksgestel combines open-air theatre, modern church architecture, traditional baking, mill history and cross-border routes. This gives the town a varied character when choosing a holiday rental in Luyksgestel: you can give different weight to culture, culinary crafts, border history and woodland landscapes, without limiting your stay to just one type of experience.
Culture and Crafts in Luyksgestel
At De Hunnebergen open-air theatre, visitors can enjoy music, theatre and events from May through November. The open-air theatre opened behind ’t Boscheind in 1930 and is considered the second-oldest open-air theatre in Noord-Brabant.
The Sint-Martinuskerk is a modern church built in 1958 and designed by E. Nijsten.
The De Deen windmill was built in 1839 at the request of J. Pleek, a miller from Denmark; its name derives from him. Practical baking is the focus at the De Grenswachter Bakery Museum: in workshops, you can prepare Brabantse worstenbroodjes, homemade kruimelvlaai or bread. The museum also offers tours of the adjacent post mill and the informal bakery museum. It has its own car park, and a bus stop is 150 metres away.
Border History and Distinctive Local Features
The Smokkelroute Luyksgestel crosses the border and a canal towards the Belgian town of Lommel. At the same time, it tells Nellie’s smuggling story, including her plans to take butter and cigarettes across the border. Border Post 191, located along this route, marks the highest natural point in Noord-Brabant.
The Kraaienpootmonument was erected in the centre of Luyksgestel in 1985; it was created by Ad Wouters and Jan van den Dungen. The monument reminds the people of Luyksgestel and other residents of the border region of smuggling.
Woodland Landscapes and Mountain Biking Routes
The De Boscheindroute mountain biking route runs roughly west of Luyksgestel through the woodland areas of Postelse Heide, Venakkerbosch, Riebos and Stevensbergen. Each of these areas is characterised by its own flora and fauna. The approximate direction and the multiple landscape sections help you distinguish different excursion interests when planning, without assuming an exact route length.
