Nature between forests, heathland and river valleys
The landscape around Boxtel offers several distinctly different impressions. Kampina is a nature reserve between Boxtel and Oisterwijk with forests, heathland and stream valleys; it covers more than 1,200 hectares. Landgoed Sparrenrijk lies north of Boxtel, with straight, tree-lined avenues arranged in a rectangular pattern. More than 30 bird species breed there, and there are also many mushrooms. De Geelders lies north of Boxtel and east of Liempde. The 350-hectare area consists of coppice woodland embankments, deciduous forest with avenues, poplar groves, heathland, grassland and fields. De Scheeken is located south of Liempde, between Landgoed Velder and the Dommel valley.
Water, exercise and cycling routes
The De Langspier recreational lake lies between Boxtel and Esch. The outdoor natural swimming area has designated swimming zones, an extensive sandy beach and green sunbathing lawns. Facilities include swimming, a playground, sunbathing lawns and beach volleyball. At Kanovereniging De Pagaai, you can canoe the “Rondje Boxtel” circuit. Various cycling and hiking routes also run through the municipality of Boxtel and its neighboring municipalities. A 155-kilometer cycling and experience route follows the former railway line of the Duits Lijntje.
Boxtel between the Middle Ages, faith and geological history
The Oertijdmuseum in Boxtel is the largest geological museum in the Netherlands. Visitors can walk through a dinosaur forest and watch fossils being prepared in the laboratories. Kasteel Stapelen is more than 700 years old and still features many historic elements. The Sint-Petrusbasiliek is a late Gothic cross church built in the 15th and 16th centuries. During occasional guided tours, it may be possible to climb the tower up to the first lantern, with views over Boxtel.
A special tradition is the Heilig Bloedprocessie. Every year, on the first Sunday after Pentecost, it proceeds through the streets of central Boxtel and is included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The historic Boxtel route also passes twelve historic stations. The Reli-route Boxtel-Centrum starts at Breukelsplein, leads through the center and returns to the starting point via Stapelen; it is 2.9 kilometers long.
Museums, crafts and regional specialties
MUBO showcases cultural heritage and modern art. Through the Canon van Boxtel, it presents the history of Boxtel from prehistoric times to the modern era. Museum Vekemans displays works of art, Brabantse poffers, as well as objects related to washing and ironing. Museum de Canonije is housed in a centuries-old building, the Kanunnikenhuisje, and focuses on memories of the canons in Boxtel. These include objects, images, writings, photographs and a film documentary.
The De Kleuskes village museum brings Brabant family life and the village life of clog makers to life. The former farm has been preserved as it was when it was abandoned in 1982; visits are arranged by appointment. For vehicle enthusiasts, Classic Park in Boxtel is a dynamic museum of classic and exclusive vehicles. At D'n Buff water buffalo farm, buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, buffalo burgers and other products made from water buffalo milk are available to taste or purchase.
Liempde and the Dommel valley
Liempde has monumental farmhouses, an authentic village center and traditional events such as Boerderijendag and Boeremert. From the 't Meulke viewing tower, you can look out over the meadows of the Dommel valley, the poplar-lined landscape and the characteristic “bolle” fields. The tower is also a birdwatching site; quails and partridges, among other species, breed there.
D'n Liempdsen Herd is a visitor center in a former monumental Langgevelboerderij in Liempde. As a tourist information point, it provides information about the surrounding area as well as hiking and cycling routes.
