Boxtel offers several distinct travel interests: church architecture, castle history and museums sit alongside nature and activities on the water. The Kampina has wet heathland, pools and various types of woodland and meadow; the cultural and historical Banisveld walking route near Boxtel passes through a less-visited part of this area. There is also the seasonal Rondje Boxtel, a canoe trip. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Boxtel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: museums and architectural history, a walking route, or an experience with a specific date or season.

Boxtel’s history at specific places

In the centre of Boxtel, there is an information board at each stop along the historical route. If you enjoy exploring history one stop at a time, the boards provide information about the places along the route as you go. The MUBO’s Canon van Boxtel offers a different kind of overview. It comprises 49 windows, covering the most important events, people, objects and works of art from Boxtel. The route focuses on stops around town, while the Canon brings historical themes together in one collection.

The Sint-Petrusbasiliek and Kasteel Stapelen also shape Boxtel’s historical character. The basilica is a Late Gothic cruciform church, built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Guided tours are held occasionally. The highlight is climbing the tower to the first lantern, from where you can see across all of Boxtel. Since tours are held only occasionally and availability may vary, ask about a date during your travel period.

Kasteel Stapelen is more than 700 years old. The surrounding estate lies where the Dommel flows into the centre of Boxtel. Around Stapelen, you will encounter both a castle steeped in history and a close connection to the course of the river and the town centre.

Museums with different perspectives

At the Oertijdmuseum, visitors can see how fossils are prepared. There are two preparation laboratories, which were added in 2017. The focus is therefore not only on fossils, but also on how they are prepared. This is a different museum experience from the themes of the Canon van Boxtel or the cars at Classic Park.

Classic Park’s automobile museum displays classic and exclusive cars across spacious exhibition areas. There is an information board beside every vehicle. The vehicles and their accompanying texts are at the heart of this museum visit. Together, the three museums cater to different interests: Boxtel’s history, fossil preparation and cars. If you want to give your trip a cultural focus, you can choose based on which type of exhibition appeals to you most.

Kampina, the walking route and canoeing

Kampina still has wet heathland with pools, fragrant bog myrtle thickets, meadows, deciduous woodland and purple moor grass meadows. The cultural and historical Banisveld walking route near Boxtel passes through a less-visited part of Kampina, where nature and cultural history come together. On this route, the landscape and its historical context are part of the same experience.

Rondje Boxtel is a canoe trip of approximately 9 kilometres, lasting around 2 to 2.5 hours. It is a seasonal activity, and operating dates may change. So check before your trip whether the canoe outing is available during your visit. The approximate distance and duration help you get a sense of the time involved; they are not exact figures.

Allow for dates when planning your trip

The Heilig Bloedprocessie in Boxtel takes place on Corpus Christi, the first Sunday after Pentecost. As the calendar date changes every year, check the specific date if the procession is the reason for your trip. This distinguishes it from the architectural and museum attractions described as being available year-round, which are not tied to an annual feast day.

Timing also matters for the tower tour and the canoe trip: tours are held occasionally, and canoeing is seasonal. If either experience is important to your stay, check availability for your travel dates. When looking for a holiday rental in Boxtel, you can first decide whether your stay will be shaped by a specific date, a seasonal activity, or a general interest in history, museums and the landscape.
