Nature and trails

Vaalserberg reaches 322.5 metres above NAP. Its slopes offer numerous hiking routes and climbs for cycling tours. The forests and the area around the Three-Country Point are freely accessible every day all year round. The visitor area there includes two observation towers and the Three-Country Point Labyrinth.

A longer connection between the landscape and local culture is provided by the 25-kilometre Cittaslow hike Rond(je) Jemèngde. It passes all Cittaslow ambassadors and sights in the municipality of Vaals. The Kasteel Vaalsbroek hiking route also starts directly at Kasteel Vaalsbroek and leads via hiking junctions into the hilly landscape behind the estate.

Culture and history

The Vaals Museum presents its collection in a monumental monastery chapel. On display are more than 200 church and monastery statues from the Neo-Gothic period between 1850 and 1920. Visitors can walk along Stations of the Cross in the park and light a candle in the Marian Chapel.

Many buildings from the period of the formerly important textile industry still stand in Vaals’ historic centre, which was shaped in part by Johann Arnold von Clermont. A historic city walk through Vaals leads to the imposing Von Clermonthuis. De Kopermolen Vaals is located in a former Evangelical Lutheran church built in 1736/1737 by Protestants from Aachen. Today, De Kopermolen Vaals offers a programme of concerts and exhibitions.

Kasteel Vaalsbroek also refers to several eras: it developed from the “hoff zo Broiche”, mentioned in 1479, while the present manor house was built shortly after 1733. The Vaalsbroekermolen was built in 1765.

Wine and regional trails

Domein Holset offers guided tours of the vineyard and tastings. The production of Limburg sparkling wines is presented during these tours. The 11-kilometre Route des Vins passes two wineries in the Vaals area and combines regional wine production with a signposted trail.

Getting there and mobility

Vaals can be reached by bus from Aachen, Maastricht and Heerlen. A corresponding offer allows unlimited travel by bus and, where applicable, train through South Limburg and to Aachen for one or two days.
