Lemiers Castle and the landscape along the Selzerbeek

Lemiers Castle developed from a residential tower surrounded by a moat into a modest castle with a spacious outer bailey. The estate can be reached from the village via an old avenue of lime trees. It lies in the Selzerbeek valley, where the Selzerbeek meets the Hermansbeek; there, the Selzerbeek forms the border with Germany.

Oud-Lemiers also has a distinctive rural character. Old farmsteads, half-timbered farmhouses and the Selzerbeek define this part of the village. Those interested in historic village scenes and evolved landscapes will find a different side of Lemiers here than on a visit to the religious buildings.

Chapels, Church and Religious Heritage

The Church of Saint Catherine and Saint Lucy in Lemiers was built in 1895–1896 in the Neo-Romanesque style, based on a design by Roermond architect J. Jorna. The Catharina Chapel is older: it dates from the 11th or 12th century and is the oldest single-nave church in the Netherlands in its original condition. Its entire interior was painted in 1978 by Hans Truijen in the Expressionist style.

The Catharina Chapel is located on the former Roman road from Aachen to Maastricht. Tours of the chapel are possible exclusively by prior arrangement. At Sint Benedictusberg Abbey, the entire building has the status of a Rijksmonument. Visitors may attend the prayer services of the Sint Benedictusberg community.

Exploring on Foot or by Bicycle

The Cittaslow hike Rond(je) Lemieësj is an 8 km route through Lemiers and Holset. It offers a concrete way to connect both villages as part of a longer hike. Another perspective is provided by an archaeological route featuring religious heritage, which takes cyclists in the direction of Lemiers. Lemiers Castle and the Catharina Chapel are stops along this route.

Winegrowing and Regional Specialties

Domein Holset adds the theme of wine to the historic and scenic impressions. Grapes are grown there for producing sparkling wine using the traditional method. Bookable tours combine a walk through the vineyards with a tasting of three sparkling wines. Visitors can also taste the wines without taking a tour.

Bowling and Indoor Go-Kart Track

Powerarea offers a more active option. The facility has ten bowling lanes and a two-level indoor go-kart track with a tunnel. This makes it possible to vary the selection of daily destinations between culture, exercise and weather-independent activities.
