Harlingen on the Wadden Sea – Culture, Harbor and Holiday Apartments

Harlingen is Friesland’s only seaport city. The Wadden Sea lies directly offshore from the city, and the size of the beach changes with the ebb and flow of the tide. As a result, the harbor, coast and changing water levels are among the town’s clearly recognizable features.

Culture

A prominent monument on the Westerzeedijk is De Stenen Man, a national monument that was erected in Harlingen in 1576. The Harlingen monument map lists more than 500 national monuments, more than 200 municipal monuments, a protected townscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 425 buildings that contribute to the character of the townscape. The Grote Kerk is also part of the historic building stock: the detached, late-Baroque hall church from the late 18th century was built onto the Romanesque tower of a demolished predecessor church.

The Hannemahuis presents the history and art of Harlingen, as well as changing exhibitions on historical subjects and contemporary visual art. At the museum, you can also visit a distillery dating from 1760 and learn about the Admiralty of Friesland. The oldest parts of the front house date from around 1545. Notable exhibits include a miniature house at a scale of 1:4, depicting the interiors of houses around the Zuiderzee from 1650 to 1900. The Hannemahuis also includes a garden with a copper beech, flowering stinsen plants in spring and sculptures by contemporary artists during the summer months. The archival materials of the Harlingen Municipal Archives can be viewed by anyone interested in the reading room of the Municipal Archives in the Hannemahuis, Voorstraat 56 in Harlingen.

The Harlinger Aardewerk- und Tegelfabriek produces ceramics and tiles using the traditional tin-glazing technique, which has been used in Harlingen since 1598. In its shop, you can experience the craft up close and view the range of products. Factory tours are available by arrangement for groups of at least ten people.

Another cultural venue is DOK 5 on Nieuwe Willemshaven in Harlingen. This freely accessible venue combines art, culture and education. DOK 5 consists of 14 containers and offers changing exhibition spaces. The harbor is also home to Broken Jug, a monumental work of art by American artist Frank Stella. Its lighting changes with the tides of the Wadden Sea.

Water

Harlingen’s Bruine Vloot comprises more than 70 historic seagoing ships that dock in the outer and inner harbors. On the historic ships in this fleet, you can sail across the Wadden Sea or IJsselmeer. The Witte Swaen, now known as the Willem Barentsz expedition ship, was reconstructed in Harlingen according to the construction methods of the late 16th century. The historic lifeboat C.A. den Tex also offers trips across the Wadden Sea, through the harbor of Harlingen and/or to one of the Wadden Islands.

With the Jonge Seun solar ferry, you can travel quietly and sustainably through the harbor of Harlingen while passing the industrial heritage along the quays. In a harbor brewery in Harlingen located outside the dike, Het Brouwdok brews its own beers; from there, the view extends across the Wadden Sea.

Routes

Themed city walks in Harlingen last around 1.5 to 2 hours and are approximately 5 kilometers long. For a combination of local history and landscape, there is Wijnaldum near Harlingen: the Archeologisch Steunpunt Wijnaldum presents archaeological finds from Wijnaldum and its surroundings, with a particular focus on a richly decorated gold brooch from around 650 AD. The Archeologisch Steunpunt Wijnaldum regularly organizes activities, including walks to the terp where the gold brooch was found. From Wijnaldum, you can also take an approximately 6-kilometer Terpenkuier walk using an app.

The LF Coastal Route from Harlingen to Holwerd begins in Harlingen and runs along the Frisian North Sea coast, with the Wadden Sea in the immediate vicinity. Harlingen is also a departure point for boats to Vlieland and Terschelling.
