Holiday apartment in Weststellingwerf: Nature, Water and Culture

Weststellingwerf features a landscape shaped by peat extraction in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Rottige Meente consists of peat cuttings and strips of land, as well as a mosaic of water and land, reed beds, quaking bogs, and flowering grasslands. Along the Linde between De Blesse and Wolvega lies the Lendevallei, which is accessible year-round during the daytime.

Nature

As part of the Lendevallei, the Blessebrugschans is also accessible year-round during the daytime; parking is available at the Blessebrug in Wolvega. In the Lendevallei, you can hike through the swamp forest and cycle along the stream. In the Rottige Meente, guided hikes can be taken along the banks of peat cuttings with a forester. In the Brandemeer in Weststellingwerf, you can go for walks and cycle tours; you can also photograph nature there and discover various bird species.

The cycle path along the Lende between the Vinkegavaartweg near De Hoeve and the Domeinenweg near De Blesse was modified in 2021. At three locations, old meanders of the Lende were restored.

Water and Routes

The Driewegsluis transit marina has a boat slipway, six pitches for motorhomes, as well as toilets, showers, electricity, water, and a wastewater disposal facility. Via the Driewegsluis near Nijetrijne, you can travel by water from Overijssel to Friesland and choose between the Friese Merengebied and the historic Turfroute.

De Scheene is a waterway in the Rottige Meente that runs from Nijeholtpade to Spanga and is now used mainly for boat excursions. The Boswachterspad Rottige Meente starts at the car park on the Pieter Stuyvesantweg in Nijetrijne and follows red arrows along a 16.6-kilometre hiking route.

Culture and History

De Mars in De Blesse is an octagonal grain mill in the form of a gallery Dutch windmill and has been listed as a Rijksmonument since 11 October 2005. De Mars is open to the public by appointment. Windlust in Noordwolde is also open to the public by appointment.

The Blessebrugschans was built during the Eighty Years’ War as a star-shaped defensive structure at a strategic location on the Linde and was part of the Friese Waterlinie. It was reopened in 2010 after its earth rampart and bridge had been reconstructed.

The Museum ’t Kiekhuus in Wolvega is located in the former De Korenschoof bakery. On every visit, visitors always receive a guided tour from one of the residents. The Nationaal Vlechtmuseum presents the history of the local basketry industry and the Rijksrietvlechtschool, where the craft of basketry was developed into an artistic form of expression. In workshops, old and new basketry techniques can be tried out in practice under the guidance of basket makers.

Leisure and Flavours

The heated outdoor pool De Dobbe in Noordwolde is located in a recreational area and has several pools, a play area, a slide, a diving board, and a kiosk.

The dishes at Smink op Zoolder draw on chef Jan Smink’s Frisian roots. They are guided by the seasons, products from sources that are as close to their original form as possible, and ingredients from the food forest.
