Holiday apartment in Vlieland: Nature, Wadden Sea and history

Vlieland combines vast natural areas, tidal flats and island history within a small area. Around 80 percent of the island is nature reserve and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer. At the same time, most of Vlieland is part of Natura 2000. This affects where construction is permitted, where visitors may go and when areas are closed. Adjacent to the island is the Wadden Sea, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2009.

Nature

The Vliehors at the western tip of Vlieland is particularly impressive: a 2,120-hectare, treeless expanse of sand. The Kroon's Polders form another focal point of the landscape. This nature reserve, consisting of four polders, serves around 70 bird species as a breeding ground, refuge and feeding area. Along the dike bordering the Kroon's Polders is a suitable spot for birdwatching; visitors can also walk around the polders and visit a new birdwatching hide there.

Another birdwatching hide is located near Dodemansbol on the southern side of the island. From there, visitors can see waders, brent geese, peregrine falcons, spoonbills, barnacle geese, wigeons, pintails and other birds in the tidal flats. Nature can also be experienced on the water: Zeehondentochten Vlieland offers trips on the Wadden Sea in a fast RIB for a maximum of twelve people to observe seals.

Hiking and observation

Vlieland's network of hiking trails comprises six routes marked with posts, as well as three special hikes ranging from two to eight kilometres in length. Bomenland also has a 3.5-kilometre hiking route established by Staatsbosbeheer and marked with posts bearing yellow bands. The seasonal accessibility of nature is part of the island's character: from 1 August to 15 March, people may hike almost everywhere on Vlieland. During the breeding season, from 15 March to 1 August, certain areas are not accessible to the public.

De Lepelaar also focuses on the nature of the Wadden region. The nature education centre is a starting point for excursions, exhibitions and creative activities. It offers interactive ways to engage, including listening to the sounds of the Vlieland night and composing a piece of music with bird calls. During the tidal-flat excursion from Paal 50, an experienced guide explains shells, lugworms, birds, currents and the interaction between ebb and flow.

Culture and history

In the village of Oost-Vlieland, historic buildings are concentrated along Dorpsstraat: it includes 39 Rijksmonumenten and is protected as a designated village conservation area. The Nicolaaskerk on Vlieland dates from 1605 and is one of the oldest originally Protestant church buildings in the Netherlands. Museum Tromp's Huys contains Vlieland's oldest building, constructed shortly after 1575. The museum presents the island's cultural and maritime history through paintings, drawings, etchings, prints, photographs, clocks, nautical and other maps, as well as ship models.

The Bunkermuseum Wn 12H presents the island's military past along its visitor route. The route leads through trenches and bunkers and past viewpoints and gun emplacements. The Vlielander Kaasbunker is also housed in a former Second World War bunker that was part of the Atlantic Wall. By appointment, it offers a video tour through the bunker and its surroundings, followed by an extensive cheese tasting. The Kaasbunker also has an exhibition about the history of the building, cheese, seaweed and other Vlieland flavour products.

The Vliehors Expres takes visitors to the western tip of Vlieland in a truck. The journey passes the former lifeboat house, which is now set up as a small beachcombing museum. Between the forest and the village of Oost-Vlieland lies the “De oude vuurtoren” miniature golf course, with 18 holes of varying difficulty. Plek van Stilte provides a quiet note: on weekdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., a church is open there for silence, sitting, quiet walking and lighting a candle.

Local specialities

Fortuna Vlieland brews craft beer and produces carbonated mineral water. At the Vlielander Kaasbunker, the history of the former structure is combined with regional flavour themes: in addition to the building, the exhibition focuses on cheese, seaweed and other Vlieland flavour products. By appointment, an extensive cheese tasting is also part of the programme offered there.

Getting there

The ferry operated by Rederij Doeksen runs from Harlingen to Vlieland and back; the journey is stated to take around one hour and 35 minutes. The direct fast ferry takes around 45 minutes. Guests are not allowed to take their cars to Vlieland. When the ferry arrives, a bus is waiting to take them to their accommodation.
