Wijnaldum was originally a terp village and is located on one of the terps in a more than two-kilometre-long row of terps running northeast. In the early Middle Ages, Wijnaldum was an important centre of trade and power. The Andreaskerk is a late Gothic hall church with an integrated west tower dating from 1904. It has a richly carved pulpit with a pulpit basket, staircase, back wall and sounding board dating from 1728. A unique golden cloak clasp from the 7th century was found at the Tjitsmaterp. The church and the find therefore point to different historical layers around Wijnaldum.

The historic site Sterne Slotland (It Sjûkelân) is located in the surroundings of Wijnaldum. The Terpen-Kuierroute Wijnaldum leads around the row of terps at Wijnaldum, which consists of six terps lying side by side on a salt-marsh ridge. The route is a five-kilometre walking trail that starts at the Archaeological Base in Wijnaldum. Starting at the Archaeological Base helps plan the walk as a defined section. The Kattenroute Wijnaldum passes eight utility boxes painted with graffiti cats.

Garden and views

The Wijnaldumer bos village garden was created in the 1970s, following land consolidation, on the site of the former terp of Wijnaldum. It has a walking path and a viewing tower at the height of the original terp. From the three-metre-high Terpentoer, there is a view across the landscape as far as the Tjitsmaterp. The three-metre-high Terpentoer thus provides a fixed viewpoint for the garden walk.

Traces of the former railway line

The Spoarpaad: Troch it lan fân Winaam passes the former Wijnaldum railway station. This stopping place was in operation from 1903 to 1935. The remains of an old railway bridge over the Ried between Wijnaldum and Sexbierum can also be seen. The former railway line therefore forms a distinct aspect of the local landscape.
