The Wold Aa and the Koekanger Aa are also part of the landscape: they meet in a small section of the Natuur Netwerk Nederland.

Walking routes of different lengths

“Blik op de Kerk” is a figure-eight walking route with the church of Blijdenstein at its centre. The large loop is 8 kilometres long, and the small loop is 4 kilometres long. The route can be started at the car park of Blijdenstein church; alternatively, you can join it from the Vorenwolde bus stop using bus route 32. The route passes along the Dooddijk, which funeral processions once used to reach the church and where a former gallows site was also located.

For longer walks, two Landschapsverhalenroutes with different starting points are available. The route of approximately 13 kilometres starts and ends at Museumboerderij De Karstenhoeve, while the route of approximately 8 kilometres starts and ends at Blijdenstein church. The different route lengths make it easier to plan a suitable day combining exercise, landscape and local history.

Churches and places of remembrance

The Bartholomeuskerk contains a single-manual organ built in 1872 by P. van Oeckelen in Harenermolen. The Bartolomeüskerk also has a 17th-century pulpit. Blijdenstein’s parish church was first mentioned in a document from 1152, which confirmed the donations made by Utrecht Bishop Hartbert (1139–1150) to the church.

More recent history is also present at specific locations. The memorial on Hardenweg commemorates the seven crew members of the Halifax MKII JD314 bomber, which crashed on 29 December 1943 after being shot down by a German night fighter. A memorial ceremony takes place every year on 4 May in the church opposite. A silent procession then leads to the grave monument of the six fallen men, where flowers and wreaths are laid. A street lined with characteristic Ruinerwold farmhouses was connected only by plank bridges until 1970. The Chinees Paviljoen was built in 1924 by the village carpenter Klaas Smilde.

Museums, pears and regional specialities

Museumboerderij De Karstenhoeve is an authentic 17th-century farm; its use as a museum can be traced back 60 years. During guided tours of the farm, proverbs and expressions that originated there are explained. The local side of the village also includes “koffie mit Roeffie”: the Museumboerderij serves pear cake, pear liqueur and a Roeffie baked according to the recipe of the Ruinerwoldse Roeffie.

The Stoofperenfeest takes place on the first Saturday in October. Around 1,200 pear trees bearing cooking pears are auctioned along the Dr. Larijweg. Farmhouses along the same road host market stalls, food trucks and activities focusing on rural and homemade products. Opoe’s Erfenis on Dijkhuizen is a shop and museum featuring kitchen textiles and old Dutch sweets.

Active days and special dates

The Blotevoetenpad at Het groene geschenk offers a letter scavenger hunt and a maze for all age groups. It can be combined with candle-making workshops at the neighbouring Kaarsenrecycling Het tweede lichtje. The programme includes workshops on taper candles, candles in jars and mosaic candles. Anyone looking for another sporting activity can play on the Buitengoed Weerwille pitch-and-putt course without a golf certificate.
