Prčanj: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The Bogorodičin hram is the parish church of Prčanj and is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was built from Korčula stone in the Baroque style; construction lasted 120 years and was completed in 1909. Inside are two gilded altars, which are described as unique in the Bay of Kotor.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Prčanj dates from the 18th century and has a library with around 4,000 volumes. The Old Parish Church on the slopes of Vrmac dates from the 14th century. The Church of Saint John the Baptist is described as one of the oldest churches in Prčanj and the bay; it is also described as having stood continuously at the same location for eight centuries. The remains of the Church of Saint Thomas in Prčanj date from the 4th century.

The waterside Three Sisters Palace is described as a well-preserved example of Gothic secular architecture outside Montenegro’s urban historic cities; historians date it to the beginning of the 15th century. A small art collection next to a church in Prčanj includes works by Trip Kokolja, Celestin Mate Medović and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. Ivan Vizin was one of the students taught by friars and experienced captains.

Before the construction of the waterside Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the Old Parish Church above Prčanj housed an icon of the Virgin Mary that was visited by up to 6,000 worshippers on feast days.

Trails and Landscape

A cross path leads from the coast of Prčanj to the Old Parish Church; the walk takes around 30 minutes each way. The path begins at Grasovo next to Verona Palace, near the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Above Prčanj, a walking path runs through cultivated areas with vineyards, orchards and olive groves on grassy terraces separated by dry-stone walls.

The historic Muo–Prčanj–Gornji Stoliv hiking trail is described as having been active in the Middle Ages. The hiking trail branches in the region around Prčanj are likewise described as being associated with religious and pilgrimage-related purposes. The route connecting the old Glavati–Prčanj–Gornji Stoliv road with the coast is paved in its first section and laid out as a horse trail in its second.

Water and Transport Connections

A small marina is located in Prčanj. Several points along the waterfront provide direct access to the bay for swimming, while large stone palaces line the waterfront. From the 17th to the 19th century, Prčanj’s maritime fleet was among the largest in the bay. Local buses between Kotor and other settlements in the bay stop in Prčanj along the main road.
