Donja Lastva by the Sea: Churches, Coast and Tradition

Donja Lastva is a small seaside village with its own culture and traditions. Between the waterfront, chapels and inherited customs, maritime settings meet traces from several centuries.

Coast and Cuisine

Boka Beach is located nearby, by Hotel Kamelija. A promenade connects the shoreline with Donja Lastva; restaurants are located near the beach. Boka Beach is a concrete beach suitable for children and adults. On the waterfront of Donja Lastva, next to a carob tree, you will find Konoba Punto Crudo. Its terrace offers views of the Bay of Boka.

Culture

St. Roch Church stands on the seafront of Donja Lastva. It was built in 1901 over an older chapel constructed by the noble Bolica family in the mid-16th century. The central altar features a 19th-century painting by Mihailo Flori from Prčanj.

Near St. Roch Church stands the Chapel of St. Mihovil in the local cemetery of Donja Lastva. Local residents built it in 1901 as a small building without an apse and with a single-part bell tower. A painting in the chapel depicts the saint in military attire, with wings and a spear.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located in the Bašići area of Donja Lastva, next to the sea. St. James Chapel stands on the former Dabinović–Makhovec estate in Donja Lastva and is ruinous and overgrown.

Historical Traces

The Chapel of Saint Teresa is located in the courtyard of the former Zmajević–Jakonja summer residence in Donja Lastva. A boundary wall with an arched portal remains from the former complex. A paved path, lined with a stone colonnade, leads to the residential building. The chapel was built in 1934 by Don Đuro Perušina, the parish priest of Gornja and Donja Lastva. The family chapel of Saint Teresa was severely damaged in the 1979 earthquake.

Customs and Activities

The Traditional Lastovo Carnival takes place in Donja Lastva on Saturdays in February. The procession heads to the pier in front of St. Roch Church.

Events held on a fixed day of the week require checking the current event date when planning a trip; for the carnival, this particularly concerns the Saturdays in February. For diving, current opening hours and course times should be checked before arrival. Travellers should also check the latest times for padel sessions. At the diving club, equipment rental, maintenance and training are separate services, and their current times can be checked individually.

Neptun-Mimoza Diving Club rents and services complete diving equipment from its base in Donja Lastva. The club trains divers and caters to tourists who want to dive in the Adriatic. Padel Montenegro is located in Donja Lastva near Hotel Kamelija.
