Castle history and literary traces

The history of Wilwerwiltz goes back a long way. The village is first mentioned in a deed of donation from 768 or 769. A visible sign of its later castle history is the surviving tower of the Wëlwerwoltzer Schlass. Today, it forms an integral part of the public square and is regarded as a landmark of Wilwerwiltz. When the castle was demolished in 1928, only the tower and the entrance gate remained. Thus, at a present-day square, it is possible to understand that the former castle complex has not disappeared completely.

Another cultural trace leads to the Sproochenhaus. The former home of the writer Max Goergen was his residence from 1954 until his death in 1978. The Sproochenhaus also housed a library with around 32,000 works. Church, organ and devotion to Saint Willibrord

The present-day church of Wilwerwiltz also embodies several layers of history. It is under the protection of Saint Willibrord and was built between 1960 and 1963 on the site of the former castle chapel of the Lordship of Wilwerwiltz. Particularly noteworthy is the Stahlhuth organ from 1914. It was installed in the church in 2010 and has been preserved in its original condition. Thus, the church brings together a more recent building and an instrument with a history of its own.

The tradition surrounding Saint Willibrord also includes the Willibrordus Chapel and the Willibrordus Fountain. They are not far away from the village chapel, in a southerly direction. A small chapel was built above the fountain in 1934. A High Mass is held every year on Whit Monday; in addition, the people of Kiischpelt and many pilgrims from outside the area make a pilgrimage to the Willibrordus Fountain. The Wilwerwiltz Auto-Pédestre trail offers another way to experience the village and its surroundings. Shortly after starting in the village centre, the trail leads to the St Willibrordus Chapel. It then crosses the Clerve and the railway line. This sequence provides concrete guidance for planning your day: you can plan the trail as a focus in its own right or combine it with an interest in the history of Saint Willibrord.
