Noertrange: Trails, Wiltz Basin and Airfield History

Hiking with a View of the Wiltz Basin

The local WS 2 hiking trail is signposted in both directions with white-and-blue markings bearing the inscription “WS 2”. There is a car park directly at the starting point, making it easier to begin your day of hiking.

Another described route leads up a slope to the hamlet of Noertrange. The ascent opens up a variety of views over the entire Wiltz Basin. A short detour to Noertrange is also recommended. Airfield and Skydiving

Noertrange Airfield was officially inaugurated on 17 July 1956. At weekends, the airfield welcomes visitors for sightseeing flights and flights in an aircraft. For families or travel groups looking for a special shared experience in addition to a hike, this aspect of the place offers an unusual contrast to its peaceful elevated location.

Skydive Luxembourg offers tandem jumps at weekends from April to October. A tandem jump includes a 15-minute briefing, a 20-minute sightseeing flight and the jump from an altitude of 4,000 metres. During the season, jumping operations take place on weekends and public holidays. Skydive Luxembourg’s drop zone is located at a private grass airfield in northern Luxembourg.

Those who would like to explore skydiving in greater depth can also find an AFF course there. It is structured in seven stages with increasing independence and leads from the first freefall jump to an independent exit, freefall and parachute flight. Spontaneous jumps are possible without club membership: visitors can show up on a jumping day and register at the manifest.

History and Local Stories

Noertrange is documented in 1310 under the name Nortingen. Until 1803, the village belonged to the parish of Wiltz; Noertrange also belonged to the Lordship of Wiltz. The history of the local chapel also reaches back to earlier centuries: in 1675, parishioners borrowed 16 thalers from the chapel in Erpeldange to finance roofing work on the chapel of Noertrange.

A local legend lends the history of the place a ghostly side. According to this tale, after nightfall it was possible to encounter ghosts near the gallows erected between Noertrange and Wiltz. Such traditions add a narrative perspective to the walk without mixing the historical view of the place with present-day activities.
