Wiltz combines a red cultural trail with castle museums, brewing history, garden art and a cycle path along the river. Its themes range from the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944/45 to the stages of beer production and a garden of plants, terraces, water features and sculptures. You can make the town’s history, designed landscapes or outdoor activities the focus of your stay. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth first considering which of Wiltz’s distinctive features you want to shape your stay.

Attractions along the Red Cultural Trail

The Red Cultural Trail includes 25 attractions, 12 of them in the Lower Town, and is about 4.5 kilometres long. The Lower Town is therefore a clearly defined focal point of the route, although the cultural trail also includes other stops. The approximate route length and number of attractions give you a concrete starting point for planning. You can think in advance about which stops interest you most, rather than basing your visit solely on the total number.

Castle museums: brewing, tanning and the Battle of the Bulge

The Musée National d’Art Brassicole et de la Tannerie is housed in the former stables of Wiltz Castle. The National Brewing Art and Tannery Museum presents different stages of beer production, from milling the malt through boiling and fermentation to storage. A separate section is devoted to the history of tanning. The museum thus focuses on both the craft of brewing beer and another historic trade.

The experience also includes learning the art of brewing beer and then tasting your own beer. This adds a practical dimension to the subject, alongside the presentation of the individual stages of production. If you are especially interested in the process from malt to storage, you can make this museum visit a focus of its own.

At Wiltz Castle, the Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes 1944-45 Wiltz tells the story of the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944/45. The collection includes documents, photographs, equipment and weapons. Written and visual materials are displayed alongside objects from the collection. The museum therefore offers a historical focus that differs clearly from the other museum’s coverage of brewing and tanning.

Garden art and a cycle path by the river

The Jardin de Wiltz is a 2.5-hectare living work of art. Plants, terraces, water features, sculptures, paths and stone installations are all part of its design. The many different elements give the garden a different way to experience Wiltz than the exhibitions in the castle: here, a designed landscape and outdoor art shape the visit. If you enjoy combining different forms of cultural discovery, it offers a distinct contrast to the museum programme.

If you prefer to explore by bike, the Wiltz cycle path offers another way to experience the landscape. It passes through forests and fields, always runs close to the River Wiltz and stays away from road traffic. The route combines an experience of the landscape with a clearly described course. As you plan, you can consider whether a stay focused on museums and the garden or on the cycle path better suits your interests.

Performances and planning your visit

The Festival de Wiltz offers concerts and a varied programme of performing arts. If you want to plan your trip around a particular performance, check the relevant dates in advance. Guided tours of Wiltz Castle and/or the town of Wiltz are available on request. So, if you would like a guided introduction, remember to make an enquiry. Wiltz is easily reached by car and public transport; if travelling by public transport, it is advisable to check the latest connections.

You can choose a holiday apartment based on which location suits your planned activities, without giving every activity equal priority.
