Discover Diekirch: Culture, the Sauer and Hiking Trails

Diekirch combines urban history, landscapes and special excursion destinations within a compact thematic area, without this implying any specific distance between all the sights. The town lies directly on the Sauer and is surrounded by hills such as Haardt and Goldknapp.

Urban History and Unusual Museums

At the Musée d'Histoire[s] Diekirch, the permanent exhibition extends across five rooms. The Museum of the History of Diekirch covers the town's development from prehistoric artefacts to current events and displays, among other things, an ancient Roman mosaic. The educational programmes are interesting for families with different interests and include special workshops for children relating to the exhibitions. Directly next to the Musée d'Histoire[s] Diekirch is a cultural centre that hosts changing themed exhibitions every month, as well as presentations by local, regional and international artists.

Another focus is on military history. The Musée National d'Histoire Militaire presents the Battle of the Bulge across more than 3,000 square metres of exhibition space and uses life-size dioramas for illustration. A central exhibit is a model of the nighttime crossing of the Sauer near Diekirch on 18 January 1945 by units of the US 5th Infantry Division. The Conservatoire National de Véhicules Historiques, on the other hand, is dedicated to the history of the automobile and motorised land transport since the late 19th century. It is housed in the former Jean-Wagner car factory and presents themed exhibitions that have been compiled on a rotating annual basis since 2019.

St. Lawrence Church also offers several historical layers. The present-day church was completed in 1868. The old St. Lawrence Church was built in the Middle Ages on a Roman place of worship; its interior is decorated with frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition, the Musée d'Histoire de la Brasserie Diekirch documents more than a century of advertising history of the Brasserie de Diekirch with a private collection. Diekirch beer is still brewed in the town today.

Sauer Riverside, Educational Trail and Hiking Experiences

The “In Bedigen” nature experience park covers 11.2 hectares and is located on the right bank of the Sauer at the place known as “in Bedigen”. Diekirch donkeys and Scottish Highland cattle can be found there. An educational trail 2.5 km long leads through the park; 12 interactive information panels provide information about the flora and fauna of the nature reserve.

For more demanding discoveries, there is the Deiwelselter. It is not accessible by car; several hiking trails lead there, including the Éislek Pad Diekirch, the local circular trail DK 3 and the northern section of the Sentier Adrien Ries. The Deiwelselter stands on a dolmen estimated to be around 4,000 years old. The Éislek Pad Diekirch also offers views of Nordstad. The three routes of the Donkey Challenge – Donkey Challenge Haard, Donkey Challenge Seitert and Donkey Challenge Härebierg – offer different ways to experience Diekirch's three mountains and the diversity of its natural environment. The Marche Internationale de Diekirch is a two-day hiking event with distances ranging from 12 to 80 kilometres.
