Holiday apartment in Valpiana between the aquarium and the prehistoric world

The Mondo Marino Aquarium in Valpiana is a centre for marine environmental education and the home of the SHARKS StUDIES CENTRE. It has 37 tanks with Mediterranean, tropical and Atlantic species; you can also discover more than 150 animal and plant species there. Explora Dinosauri in Valpiana features 20 life-size, true-to-nature representations of dinosaurs and prehistoric fish. The aquarium focuses on marine habitats, while Explora Dinosauri is dedicated to the prehistoric past.

Iron culture in the town centre

Valpiana’s history remains tangible. The ironworking facilities are still visible in the town centre. From the 15th to the 18th century, Valpiana was an advanced centre for ironworking. The Gora delle Ferriere was an artificial canal that powered the ironworking facilities with water power.

Hiking, mountains and the surrounding beaches

The hiking route from Lago dell’Accesa can be continued for 4.5 km to Valpiana; from Valpiana, bus connections back to Massa Marittima are available on the Follonica–Montieri line operated by Toscana Mobilità. The 4.5 kilometres constitute the section between Lago dell’Accesa and Valpiana for hiking-planning purposes; the return journey to Massa Marittima continues by bus. Poggio al Chiecco is a mountain in the vicinity of Valpiana. The Ultima Spiaggia and Mirollino beaches are also located in the surrounding area. The landscape references differ: Poggio al Chiecco is a mountain, while Ultima Spiaggia and Mirollino are beaches.

Museums in the surrounding area

The MAGMA Museo delle Arti in Ghisa della Maremma, the Pinacoteca A. Modigliani, the Museo di Storia Naturale and Portus Scabris are museums in the area around Valpiana. These four museums complement the visible ironworking facilities in the town centre.
