Holiday apartment in Roccalbegna – village history and nature

Holiday apartment in Roccalbegna: village history and nature

Roccalbegna is a medieval village whose characteristic right-angled street network was laid out by Sienese architects at the end of the 13th century. A holiday apartment in Roccalbegna opens up a stay in which village history, art and nature can be combined as different focal points of your trip.

Preserved cultural heritage in the village

Roccalbegna’s preserved religious and civic heritage includes, among other sites, the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, the Chiesa del Crocefisso, the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso, the Cassero with its garden, the Palazzo della Lana, the Palazzo Bichi Ruspoli, and the fully preserved town wall with the Porta di Maremma.

The Pietra is a tower rising above Roccalbegna. It can be reached via a steep paved road followed by narrow stone steps. Two different sections of the route must therefore be taken into account when planning this visit.

The Oratorio del Crocifisso now houses a museum with a picture gallery featuring works by Francesco Nasini and Sebastiano Folli in particular. The Madonna Chapel outside the Porta di Maremma contains 15th-century frescoes. Roccalbegna is also home to an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child, painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in 1340.

Hiking and landscapes around Roccalbegna

Since 1998, Bosco Rocconi has been part of the provincial nature reserve Riserva Naturale Provinciale di Rocconi as well as the SAC and SPA „Monte Labbro e Alta valle dell’Albegna“.

A hike from Roccalbegna to the Riserva Naturale del Pescinello nature reserve begins at Piazza IV Novembre and follows a steep ascent marked with white-and-red trail signs. It reaches the 149-hectare Riserva Naturale del Pescinello, which protects a rugged landscape with a gorge carved by the Albegna River, oak forests, pastures and scrubland. On this hike, the return journey from Podere Pescinello to Roccalbegna takes 45 minutes.

Monte Labbro is located in the immediate vicinity of Roccalbegna; Monte Faete, Monte Aquilaia and Monte Buceto are located in the surrounding area. The region combines a historical village visit with the hike to Pescinello and the mountains Monte Labbro, Monte Faete, Monte Aquilaia and Monte Buceto. This gives the region appeal for different types of day trips, from exploring a historic village to nature-focused activities.
