Orbetello between Lagoon and History
Orbetello combines a lagoon landscape with history. The Oasi della Laguna di Orbetello, archaeological finds, the cathedral and the Porta Medina Coeli each offer a different thematic focus. Beaches, historic sites and museums can also be found in the surrounding area and farther afield.
Lagoon Landscape and Orientation
The Oasi della Laguna di Orbetello was established in 1971. It is located within the municipality of Orbetello, in the Special Area of Conservation IT51A0026. It covers 870 hectares and lies within a larger regional nature reserve covering 1,550 hectares. For your planning, one further point is relevant: the entrance to the Oasi cannot be reached on foot or by bicycle. If you would like to include this natural area in your itinerary, take this limitation into account when planning your mobility.
Archaeology and Architectural History
The Museo archeologico di Orbetello is located on the first floor of the Polveriera Guzman. The museum displays finds from the Etruscan necropolis of Orbetello, including gold ornaments from the 4th century BC, bronze objects and pottery used for banquets. The enlargement of Orbetello Cathedral began in 1574 and was completed by Spanish craftsmen in 1582. The Porta Medina Coeli dates from 1697. This gives the cultural perspective a range extending from Etruscan finds to buildings and city gates.
Sites and Museums in the Surrounding Area
Vulci, an ancient site, is located in the wider regional surroundings of Orbetello. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cosa, a museum, is located in the area around Orbetello. These four destinations are distributed geographically across the immediate surroundings, the surrounding area and the wider regional area of Orbetello. These three different spatial references provide orientation for days focused more strongly on archaeology and history.
Regatta and Beaches
The beaches of Braccio and Tantulli Ulisse are located in the immediate surroundings of Orbetello. La capannuccia and Riva del Marchese are also located in the area around Orbetello. A local experience is the Corsa dei Barchini. This regatta takes place every year in May and features the typical lagoon boats, with Orbetello’s five Rioni competing against one another. The five Rioni give the event a clear local connection, while the typical lagoon boats make its link with the landscape visible. If you would like to combine culture, the coast and a scheduled event during your trip, Orbetello offers several clearly identifiable points of interest for doing so.
