Rocky landscape and historical traces

The western and northern slopes of Roccastrada were naturally protected by steep trachyte rock walls more than 20 metres high. In Vicolo della Contessa Giovanna, there are remains of residential buildings from the 12th century. Another distinctive landmark is the Porta del Madonnino: the medieval town gate lies in the southwest between Vicolo Basso and Piazzetta dell’Incrociata. On the slopes, the natural protection provided by the rock walls is therefore the main feature; in the town, the remains of residential buildings and a medieval town gate add built historical evidence.

Culture in the historic centre

In the Middle Ages, Roccastrada was an important centre of silver and copper mining. The historic centre preserves the Chiesa di San Niccolò, dating from the 13th century. The church was probably founded in the 11th century; its significant medieval structures apparently point to major rebuilding work in the 13th century. The Teatro dei Concordi is also part of the town’s history: it opened in 1872 and has 180 seats, including 79 in the stalls and 101 in three tiers with boxes. The chronological span therefore extends from the probable foundation of the Chiesa in the 11th century, through the major rebuilding work in the 13th century, to the opening of the theatre in 1872. Visitors interested in culture can view the church and the Teatro as buildings from different periods.

Hiking between the Maremma and Val di Farma

The Trekking Roccastrada route runs through the immediate hinterland of the Grosseto Maremma and extends into the Val di Farma. Its paths follow old routes, including the Vie delle Ferriere along the Farma stream. Other sections run beside streams or over ridges and reach elevations of up to 800 metres at Monte Alto and Sassoforte. The Itinerario della pietra has its first stop in the village of Roccastrada. Along the Farma stream, the Vie delle Ferriere follows the course of the waterway, while Monte Alto and Sassoforte mark trails reaching elevations of up to 800 metres.

Wine and springs around Roccastrada
