Suvereto can be discovered through specific places and events: the Chiesa di San Giusto, several other churches, museums, historic festivals and beaches in the surrounding area offer a range of different experiences.

Chiesa di San Giusto and Other Churches

The Chiesa di San Giusto dates back to the period from the 9th to the 12th century and served as a cathedral during the transition from the Diocese of Populonia to the present-day Diocese of Massa Marittima. Its façade, portal and quatrefoil rose window are in the Tuscan Romanesque style. The Chiesa della Madonna sopra la Porta was built in 1480 and extended in 1772; it houses a 16th-century painting depicting the Madonna Immacolata with the Child. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in 1881 by the Compagnia della Misericordia. It houses the Museo di Arte Sacra, which mainly displays paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as 15th-century wooden sculptures attributed to Lorenzo di Pietro, il Vecchietta.

The Chiostro di San Francesco was founded in 1286 by the Aldobrandeschi counts of Santa Fiora and has a square layout with five arcades on each side. The Museo Artistico della Bambola in Suvereto houses more than fifty dolls.

Events in the Historic Town Centre

The Palio delle Botti takes place twice a year: in May as the Palio di S. Croce and on the eve of Ferragosto as the Palio dell’Imperatore. Teams roll empty barrels with a capacity of 500 litres across the paving of the historic centre; the Palio is part of the national barrel-racing circuit of the Associazione delle Città del Vino. From May to September, the historic town centre hosts musical events, performances, historical re-enactments, competitions, lectures, literary evenings, film screenings and tastings of local products. Another event features a parade of allegorical floats on small vehicles as well as masked groups. On a Sunday at the end of September, the historic town centre is closed to traffic and offers children and young people numerous educational and recreational workshops.

Destinations Around Suvereto

The surrounding area also has several destinations in different categories. The Miniera del Temperino is an ancient site in the vicinity of Suvereto. Also located in the surrounding area are the Centro di documentazione di Villa Lanzi, a museum; the Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro, an ancient site; and the Rocca San Silvestro, a ruin. Ultima Spiaggia and Mirollino are beaches in the vicinity of Suvereto; Altamarea is a beach farther away in the region. The Mondo Marino Aquarium, a zoo, is also located farther away in the region.

Tourist Information in the Historic Town Centre

The tourist information and guest services office is located in the historic centre of Suvereto at Via Magenta 2 and is operated by Parchi Val di Cornia.
