A walk through the history of Montemassi

The official walking tour “Montemassi al tempo di Guidoriccio” follows a path cut into the rock to a viewpoint overlooking the village and the surrounding landscape. Along the way, it passes the surviving remains of the medieval defensive wall, including the foundation of a small rectangular tower. From the village, the route leads through a well-preserved stone gateway in the former defensive wall. This brings the landscape experience and historical traces together in the same discovery.

Churches with distinctive details

The Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie stands at the foot of the Battifolle, on the site of a Marian chapel documented since the second half of the 14th century. The present building appears to date from the early years of the 17th century. Its square floor plan, semicircular apse and arcaded portico running along three sides, with substantial brick pillars, define the building. The façade features a simple portal, two windows and a small round window.

Andrea Apostolo in Montemassi preserves a bronze bell dating from the years immediately following the conquest by Siena. The first record of the church dates from the 11th century. A will from 1321 mentions the planned construction of a new church in the borgo of Montemassi; the present church is hypothetically identified with the 14th-century church.

Castello di Montemassi and Battifolle

Castello di Montemassi lies 280 meters above the village and consists of two older structures. To the north are the mastio, with the beginning of a sloping wall, and the remains of a polygonal tower. To the south are the remains of a square tower with loopholes. The palazzo also retains traces of the roof structure and wooden floor ceilings. The Castello is considered one of the significant examples of Gothic architecture in the northern Maremma.

The Battifolle was a provisional fortification built within a few days during the siege for the conquest of Montemassi in 1328. Inside it was a trabucco, that is, a large throwing machine. This historical context gives the building and fortification remains around Montemassi particularly vivid depth.

Wine and rural culture in Rocca di Montemassi

The Rocca di Montemassi winery lies at the foot of the ancient village of Montemassi in southern Tuscany, between the Mediterranean coast and the Metalliferous Hills. At the wine shop, visitors can taste and purchase the winery’s wines and olive oil made from olives grown on local olive trees. The Museum of Rural Civilization houses more than 3,000 objects, as well as photographic documentation depicting over 100 years of rural life and agriculture.
