History between the castle and the Ombrone

Sasso Dʼombrone lies near the boundary with the municipality of Civitella Paganico, formed by the Ombrone River. The small castle of Sasso d'Ombrone, with its fortress, stood in a position to control the Ombrone Valley and the historic Traversa dei Monti, which connected the Grosseto area with Montalcino. Sasso d'Ombrone was also an ancient grancia, or farm estate, of the Santa Maria della Scala Hospital in Siena and guarded the bridge over the Ombrone River as early as before the year 1000.
