Monticello Amiata: Culture and Chestnut Trails

Monticello Amiata lies at an altitude of 734 metres on the road to Monte Amiata. The Poggio all'Olmo regional nature reserve is located nearby, immediately south of the town. This combination of altitude, local history and nature makes Monticello Amiata a destination for days when you want to combine culture and trails.

Medieval Traces and Sacred Art

The medieval fortifications of Monticello Amiata are almost completely preserved and include the historic entrance gates Porta Monticelli and Porta San Francesco. A significant old cistern lies beneath the main square. At the centre is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo: it was rebuilt in the mid-13th century and fundamentally redesigned in the Neoclassical style between 1815 and 1832. The church also houses a panel by Bartolomeo Neroni (Il Riccio), created between 1535 and 1540. The town's history is thus reflected in its fortifications, water supply, architecture and art.

Outside the town lies the Oratorio della Compagnia di San Sebastiano. It dates from the 15th century and preserves a painting by Manetti as well as a wooden statue of Saint Sebastian. The Santuario della Madonna di Val di Prata is also located in the immediate surroundings of Monticello Amiata. It can be reached from the Parco della Rimembranza outside the town and has been documented since 1198.

Everyday History in the Amiata Area

The Casa Museo documents domestic everyday life and work in a hilltop village at the end of the 19th century. With authentic furniture and household objects, it reconstructs a mountain farmstead in the Amiata area from the late 19th century. It includes a stable, a storeroom and an old animal-powered oil mill. The Casa Museo offers guided museum tours, making historical living and working environments tangible.

Chestnut Trails and Nature Experiences

The Sentiero Ontanelli leads through the chestnut grove of the Ontanelli estate, where the monumental tree “Castagnone” can be seen. The Via della Castagna is a themed hiking and excursion trail that runs through centuries-old chestnut groves in the area around Monticello Amiata; the Via delle Fonti connects two springs in the town. Both educational trails can be visited by prior registration. The Birimacola route continues in the direction of Monticello. The visitor centre of the Poggio all'Olmo nature reserve is located in Monticello Amiata, Località Prato Laforma.

Chestnuts as Part of Local Life

The Festa della Castagna takes place in Monticello Amiata every year around the beginning of October. At this festival, chestnut jam, roasted chestnuts and sweet polenta were prepared or offered. The event thus combines a seasonal occasion with a culinary aspect of the town.
