Montevarchi combines a historic town centre with museums, regional food culture and trails for active days. Those who choose a holiday apartment in Montevarchi will find a place where art, history, market visits and outdoor activity can be combined in different ways of experiencing the destination.

Montevarchi between Art and History

The historic centre of Montevarchi has a medieval layout and is organised around Piazza Varchi, the former centre of urban life. This square provides a suitable point of reference for connecting the city’s historic structure and cultural sites in your mind.

The old sacristy of the Collegiata di San Lorenzo now houses the Museo d’Arte Sacra. The historic rooms of the Cassero in Montevarchi are also home to Il Cassero per la scultura italiana dell’Ottocento e del Novecento. Sacred art and Italian sculpture from different periods therefore represent two distinct cultural focal points within the city.

Another focus is the history of the Valdarno. The Museo Paleontologico dell’Accademia Valdarnese del Poggio is housed in a 14th-century Franciscan monastery, accessed through a Renaissance cloister. The museum preserves around 3,000 finds from the area, which tell the history of the Valdarno from 3 million to 200,000 years ago.

Since 2016, the Museo Paleontologico has also included the Archaeological Section “Alvaro Tracchi”. Etruscan-Roman finds from the area and the Viterbo region are brought together there. The historical picture is complemented by Villa Masini, which served as a filming location for several scenes in Roberto Benigni’s Oscar-winning film “Life Is Beautiful”.

Historical traces can also be found outside the immediate centre. The Chiesa del Giglio was built in the 16th century in a rural location called Ilium (Giglio), just outside the walls of the Mercatale along the Via Fiorentina. In the village of La Ginestra near Montevarchi, the present-day Chiesa di Santa Croce is all that remains of the more significant former Sant’Angelo alla Ginestra monastery.

Market, Wine and Local Experiences

The Mercato Coperto degli Agricoltori di Montevarchi is a direct-sales market for local agricultural and food products that is open every day. It is therefore a specific place for regional products within the townscape and offers an insight into Montevarchi’s culinary side.

The Mercato Coperto regularly hosts meetings with chefs and producers, cooking demonstrations and tasting evenings. Montevarchi is also located on the Strada del Vino Terre di Arezzo, a route of more than 200 kilometres through the province of Arezzo and the Chianti DOCG Colli Aretini growing area. Wine and market interests can thus be included as a separate focus in your travel plans.

The Gioco del Pozzo is part of the local tradition, a traditional competition between the districts of Montevarchi. This gives you a multifaceted picture of the town: historic squares and sacred buildings stand alongside museums, culinary meeting places and a community-oriented custom.

Circular Trail and Cycling Route

The Sentiero Antonio Losi is a 13-kilometre circular trail with 400 metres of elevation gain. It starts at Piazza Donatori di Sangue in Montevarchi, just a few steps from the railway station. The combination of a fixed distance, elevation gain and return to the starting point makes it easier for anyone planning an active day with a clearly structured route to assess the trail.

For cycling, the Via dei Fossili is available as a cycling route between Cavriglia and Montevarchi.

Choose a Holiday Apartment Based on Your Travel Ideas

When choosing a holiday apartment in Montevarchi, you can take your travel focus into account: museums and the medieval town centre are ideal for cultural discoveries, while the Mercato Coperto and the Strada del Vino Terre di Arezzo appeal to those interested in regional flavours. The circular trail and cycling route complement these more relaxing experiences with active days. For further discoveries, you can also visit Mercatale Valdarno and Moncioni.
