Holiday apartment in Papiano – among beech forests, culture and hiking trails

Papiano brings together nature, trails and culture. Near Papiano begins the entrance to the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park; this is also where the ascent to Passo della Calla begins. The ascent runs for around 17 km through ancient beech forests that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The landscape connection thus extends from the national park via Passo della Calla to the ancient beech forest.

Active trails around Papiano

A circular route of around 30 km runs around Monte Tufone. You can cover it by bicycle, on foot or on horseback. On the approximately 30 km circular route, breaks and dividing up the distance are part of planning the day. Known by its Italian name, “Il giro del monte Tufone”, the route leads from Papiano to the springs of Calcedonia. With a length of this kind, the choice of transport affects the pace and timing of the day, while the circular route retains its fixed course between Papiano and Calcedonia.

In addition, the “Percorso N1: Falterona, Lago degli Idoli, sorgente dell'Arno” is an approximately 13 km tour lasting around six hours. Compared with the approximately 30 km Monte Tufone circular route, this involves a different time frame and route length. Falterona, Lago degli Idoli and the sorgente dell'Arno are jointly included in the name of this route. Lasting around six hours, the N1 takes up a separate part of the day.

Santa Cristina and historical traces

The Church of Santa Cristina in Papiano has been associated with the Diocese of Fiesole since 1299. Inside is a stone ciborium finial attributed to the 15th-century sculptor Mino da Fiesole or da Poppi. There is also a 15th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child in the Tuscan style. The two works of art date from the same century, but differ in material and depiction: the finial is made of stone, while the fresco depicts the Madonna and Child in the Tuscan style.

Urbech Castle was also an ancient castle of the Guidi counts and the center of the county of the same name. The name Urbech thus refers both to the castle and to the county.

Local character and culinary tradition

Since 2000, the Sagra dei Tortelli has been held in Papiano on the penultimate weekend of July. It is regarded as an outstanding activity of the Papiano community. Tortelli already appear in the name of the festival and give the event its culinary association. Alongside the trails and historical sites, a local community event is therefore also part of Papiano’s thematic diversity.
