Foiano Della Chiana combines impressive art, lively traditions and regional culinary culture. A holiday apartment in Foiano Della Chiana is ideal for a trip during which you can discover historic churches and squares, experience events or explore the landscape of Valdichiana Aretina. The Strada del Vino Terre di Arezzo also offers a special way to experience the region: along this route, you can explore and taste the gastronomic specialities and DOC wines of the entire Arezzo wine-growing area.

Art and Historic Sites in Foiano Della Chiana

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, formerly the Chiesa di San Domenico, houses the polychrome glazed terracotta work Ascensione di Gesù, attributed to Andrea and Giovanni della Robbia and dating from 1495–1500. In the Collegiata di San Martino, you can see Luca Signorelli’s large altarpiece Incoronazione della Vergine. The Chiesa della Ss. Trinità also houses the oil painting La Ss. Trinità con Angeli e Santi by Antonio Cercignani, also known as Il Pomarancio.

The Museo Civico di Foiano was established in 1975 in the Chiesa-museo della Fraternita di Santa Maria, also known as Sant’Eufemia. The municipal art trail “Cinque chiese...un museo” presents the artistic heritage of the castle of Foiano Della Chiana, its five churches and the Tempio di S. Stefano alla Vittoria. One church in Foiano Della Chiana houses the glazed terracotta work Madonna della Cintola con San Tommaso e San Leonardo, attributed to Andrea Della Robbia and dated 1502. One sculptural group consists of four individual life-size figures and another group of four figures depicting the fainting Virgin at the Cross; it is made of glazed terracotta, with painted sections in natural-coloured terracotta. The Palazzo delle Logge was a 16th-century hunting residence of the Medici and now houses the Biblioteca Comunale. Among local residents, Piazza Cavour has traditionally been known as “Piazz’Alta” and can be reached via a staircase passing beneath the arch of the Torre Civica.

Carnival, Flower Fair and Regional Traditions

The Carnevale di Foiano is documented by a provision in the community statute of 1539. At the Carnevale di Foiano, four large allegorical floats compete and pass before a jury of nationally renowned art experts. The event ends with the public burning of Re Giocondo during the Rificolonata ceremony. Foiano in Fiore reveals another facet of the town: in its 40th edition, the historic flower fair in the historic centre was dedicated to horticulture, crafts and art and included events, exhibitions and activities for families. During the Easter season, the Ciambellino di Foiano, a large ring-shaped biscuit made from flour and eggs, is traditionally eaten dipped in Vin Santo.
