The first mention of a “castrum” on the hill of Stenico dates back to 1163. It probably referred to a group of fortifications protecting the surrounding villages. Since 1973, Castel Stenico has belonged to the Castello del Buonconsiglio museum. Its educational activities at the castle include playful trails and brainteasers.

The historic village itself also tells the story of different eras. It has traditional residential buildings, elegant palazzi and numerous fountains in its squares. Val Laone is home to the Arca di Fraporte, a natural arch shaped by karst and torrent processes. Within the municipality of Stenico, it is a geotope recognised by Adamello Brenta Nature Park. Val d’Algone lies partly within Stenico in Adamello Brenta Nature Park, between the Ponte Pià gorge and Passo del Gotro.

Hiking Trails with History and Art

The Percorso Valle dei Mulini – Stenico is a hiking trail that begins in Stenico and leads from the piazza along an old mule track to the River Sarca at the entrance to the Forra della Scaletta. Along the way, you can see the ruins of old mills and workshops, as well as facilities still in operation for generating electricity. Another circular route, the Stenico Tour, passes through meadows, forests and agricultural land before returning to its starting point in Stenico.
