Albiano: Porphyry, San Biagio and Nature

Albiano stands for porphyry culture, protected nature and trails through different types of landscapes. This combination extends from the town centre to the landscapes along the water and in the forests.

Porphyry and history in the town centre

The Museo Casa Porfido traces the porphyry processing chain: from the formation of the raw material extracted in the surrounding quarries to the finished products manufactured worldwide. The Museo Casa Porfido organises educational museum workshops and guided tours of the quarries. When planning the day, the museum, the workshops and the guided tours of the quarries can be scheduled as separate activities. Here, porphyry appears both as a natural stone from the surrounding area and as a material used to manufacture finished products.

In the town centre of Albiano, the ancient Church of San Biagio is already mentioned in a document from 1149. The central Piazza di San Biagio between the two churches was paved with porphyry from the surrounding area in 1975 and designed as a permanent exhibition on porphyry processing in Val di Cembra.

Protected nature and the Avisio

The Biotopo Monte Barco is a protected natural area established in 1990 in the municipality of Albiano, in the Autonomous Province of Trento. In the wider surroundings of Albiano, there is also Lago di Santa Colomba, a biotope of great importance for the reproduction of many reptile and amphibian species.

Within the municipality of Albiano, the Torrente Avisio forms the boundary with the municipalities of Cembra-Lisignago and Giovo along approximately 4.3 km of its right bank. There, the stretch of river is characterised by a moderately sloping valley floor, a riverbed with large boulders and deep natural pools.

Trails for active days away

The Sentiero Albiano Biodiverso is an approximately 12 km long trail between forests, lakes, biotopes and meadows. The approximate length of around 12 km provides a clear guideline for planning the day; when planning the time, pauses along the route must still be taken into account.

The Prati di Monte Gallina are locally known as “pradi di Mongalina”, lie at an altitude of around 900 metres and are incorporated as a local reserve into a provincial ZSC area (Zona Speciale di Conservazione, Special Area of Conservation). The Prati di Mongalina are part of scenic Nordic walking routes that connect Albiano with Lago di Santa Colomba and Biotopo Le Grave and lead through mixed forests of coniferous and deciduous trees. Signposted mountain-bike routes cross the area, allowing visitors to explore it and take tours suitable for different levels of experience. Nordic walking and mountain biking refer to two different ways of getting around; both routes pass through the Prati di Mongalina area.

At Parco dei Cervi, deer can be observed in a semi-wild environment.
