The Rio Sass canyon cuts through the town of Fondo. The Passeggiata al burrone connects Fondo’s historic centre with Lago Smeraldo and runs along the Rio Sass stream. In the early 1990s, the Ciaspolada was moved from Tret to the Pradiei meadows between Fondo and Romeno. Two editions of the Ciaspolada took place exclusively in the town of Fondo. In the wider surrounding region, a winter route across the Pradiei meadows partly follows the course of the Ciaspolada snowshoe race.

Frescoes, water clock and local history

Fondo’s historic centre features painted façades dating from the 14th to the 16th century. The Church of Santa Lucia contains a rich cycle of frescoes dated to the years 1380 to 1399. You can also view several frescoes in Fondo dedicated to Saint James of Compostela. Fondo’s astronomical water clock for measuring time consists of two interconnected mechanisms powered by water.

Museum, mill and regional nature

The Museo La Casa dell'Acqua includes interactive exhibition stations such as a scale model, a 4K film, stop-motion videos and a panel explaining how a hydroelectric power station works. A guided tour of the Museo La Casa dell'Acqua also includes a visit to the Mulino Bertagnolli. At the Mulino Bertagnolli, the water from the water conduit continues to drive the wheel that once powered the millstones.

In the wider surrounding region above Lago Smeraldo, a botanical garden showcases alpine flora in its natural setting. The Malga di Fondo produces mountain cheese, butter, yoghurt and ricotta. During its operating months, it offers lunch and dinner by prior reservation. Nature observation and regional products thus become independent travel interests.
