Sea juniper and mastic shrubs grow on the dune crests of the protected coastal landscape. The coastal dune system is designated as habitat type 2250* “Coastal dunes with juniper” within the Natura 2000 protected area SAC ITA 080001 “Foce del fiume Irminio”. In addition, the area is designated as Biotope No. 38 “Plaia Grande-Marina di Ragusa”, partly because of its dune system and associated vegetation. The surroundings of Spiaggia di Playa Grande are characterised by lush Mediterranean maquis.
