Plaja Grande: Holiday Apartment, Sandy Beach and Dune Landscape
Plaja Grande is a newer village dating from the late 1960s and has a typically American-influenced layout. On the coast lies Spiaggia di Plaja Grande, a sandy beach with golden sand. The seabed slopes gently there towards the open sea. Swimming is not permitted in one area of Spiaggia di Plaja Grande. When choosing a holiday apartment in Plaja Grande, the village character and coastal landscape therefore stand side by side.
Protected Landscape Between Dunes and River Mouth
The Foce del Fiume Irminio nature reserve is located in the vicinity of Playa Grande. Playa Grande lies within the landscape of the Macchia Foresta della Foce del Fiume Irminio protected area and is subject to landscape protection level 3, the highest level. Plaia Grande is also located within the Natura 2000 SAC ITA080001 “Foce del Fiume Irminio”. The beach, protected landscape and natural features can therefore be viewed as different focal points when planning your trip.
The Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio nature reserve was established in June 1985 to protect the coastal biocoenosis, the rare Macchia-Foresta vegetation communities and the ecosystem of the Irminio River. It includes the mouth of the Irminio River, sandy Mediterranean coasts, cliffs sloping down towards the sea and wind-blown shifting dunes. Sea juniper and mastic shrubs grow on the dune crests of the protected coastal landscape. The combination of protected status and visible landscape features makes the natural setting a defining part of the village, rather than merely an addition to beach life.
The coastal dune system is designated as habitat type 2250* “Coastal dunes with juniper” within the Natura 2000 protected area SAC ITA 080001 “Foce del fiume Irminio”. In addition, the area is designated as Biotope No. 38 “Plaia Grande-Marina di Ragusa”, partly because of its dune system and associated vegetation. The surroundings of Spiaggia di Playa Grande are characterised by lush Mediterranean maquis.
Holiday Apartment in Plaja Grande: Walks and Days at the Beach
In the vicinity west of Playa Grande, a path leads through the typical local flora to the beach of the Foce del Fiume Irminio nature reserve. Playa Grande also offers walks along the coast with views of the Mediterranean. When choosing accommodation, you can decide whether coastal walks and the route through the local flora should be part of your stay just as much as the beach.
Getting There and Spatial Planning
Playa Grande can be reached from Scicli by local bus services, taxi or private transport services. A planned combined cycle and footpath is intended to connect Donnalucata and Playa Grande over a total distance of approximately 2 km. The path should therefore be understood as a planned connection, not as an existing route that is guaranteed to be available. When choosing a location, your preferred daily routine may be decisive: beach and coast stand in contrast to planning centred on natural areas and paths. For a holiday apartment in Plaja Grande, you can weigh up your preferred mix of coast, nature reserve, walks and access options.
