In its historic centre, Giarratana combines vivid everyday history with Baroque religious art, regional traditions and archaeological evidence. The Museo a Cielo Aperto makes traditional areas of life tangible for visitors. Those choosing a holiday apartment in Giarratana will find a place where different cultural interests can be combined with active stages.
Everyday culture and Baroque architecture
The Museo a Cielo Aperto is recognised as Iblean demo-ethno-anthropological cultural heritage and is protected accordingly. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate provides a different historical focus. The Baroque church was rebuilt in the early years of the 18th century after the 1693 earthquake and consecrated on 21 September 1783. Inside, visitors will find three naves richly decorated with gilded stucco work. The floor consists of alternating asphalt-stone and majolica sections dating from the 18th century.
Palazzo Barone and the history of emigration
Palazzo Barone was built by local craftsmen in the first half of the 19th century. Those wishing to visit the building on weekdays between 10:00 and 12:00 can visit it at other times by making an advance reservation with the tourism office. The Museo Ibleo dell'Emigrazione is housed on the mezzanine floors of Palazzo Barone, also known as Palazzo della Cultura. It presents an interactive journey through the emigration history of the Iblean region, featuring literature, film, music, photographs, newspapers and magazines from earlier times, as well as characteristic objects.
From antiquity to prehistory
Kasmenai is regarded as a fortified Greek citadel in the immediate vicinity of Monte Lauro. Terravecchia is the medieval settlement of Giarratana, which was destroyed by the 1693 earthquake. The Villa Romana di età imperiale in Giarratana dates from the 3rd century AD and is considered a monumental architectural complex with significant mosaics. These different periods give the town's history an unusually broad chronological span.
The Ipogeo di Calaforno is also located in the Giarratana area. The underground structure originated in the Copper Age, is of historical and anthropological interest, and is considered one of the most important monuments of its kind in Sicilian prehistory, as well as one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Sicily. The Ipogeo consists of 35 circular chambers, which were probably originally arranged in a sequence along a linear route.
Regional tradition and the Sagra della Cipolla
The Sagra della Cipolla takes place every year on 12, 13 and 14 August in Giarratana. The Cipolla di Giarratana is a sweet, white, large-sized onion variety associated with traditional agricultural practices. Alongside its buildings and museums, Giarratana's regional tradition also includes the Cipolla di Giarratana.
Trails, stages and choosing a holiday apartment
The 34th stage of the Antica Trasversale Sicula leads from Giarratana via the Ipogeo di Calaforno to Chiaramonte Gulfi. Near Calaforno, it runs along forest paths before joining the Via Selinuntina, which is mapped on this route as part of the Sentiero Ibleo. Giarratana can be reached by bus from Ragusa. When choosing a holiday apartment in Giarratana, you can combine this information with your personal priorities: historic interiors, emigration history, regional cuisine, archaeological sites or a stage featuring forest paths. This means that the focus is not just on one individual experience, but on which combination of culture, tradition and activity suits your trip.
