The Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio Nature Reserve covers 134.70 hectares, lies within the municipalities of Ragusa and Scicli, and forms part of the Natura 2000 ZSC ITA 080001 Foce del Fiume Irminio site. Petrantica borders the integral nature reserve at the mouth of the Irminio River. The nature reserve at the mouth of the Irminio is considered a site of natural history interest and lies about 1.5 kilometres south of Petrantica towards the sea. The visitor centre is housed in a manor house with a small natural history museum; cars can be parked at the visitor centre.
Ancient Traces and Cultural Sites
The archaeological excavations at Caucana are located about 10 kilometres west of Petrantica. Caucana is a Late Antique and Byzantine settlement at the Anticaglie archaeological site in Santa Croce Camerina. The small church of Caucana dates from the 6th century AD, has three naves and a mosaic-decorated bema. Castello Donnafugata includes a historic garden with avenues, paths and hidden fabriques among centuries-old trees. The MuDeCo in Donnafugata presents the history of clothing.
A Historic Place with Its Own Culinary Tradition
Petrantica is an agriturismo in Contrada Eredità, 97010 Marina di Ragusa RG. The site is an ancient fondaco built in 1642. That year, Petrantica served as a stopping station for horses and couriers: from Syracuse, they transported mail to the Hyblaean Mountains, using the ancient Via Elorina, which connected Syracuse with Camarina and was recorded by Greek authors. Petrantica offers high-quality extra virgin olive oil made from olives harvested by hand on its own estate. Petrantica also has a 200-square-metre infinity pool overlooking the sea and the green nature reserve along the Irminio River.
Sea, Harbour or Baroque Town?
