Fornace Penna and Sampieri’s history

Fornace Penna is an industrial archaeology monument on the Punta Pisciotto headland. The former facility produced bricks and roof tiles for Mediterranean markets, including Malta and Libya. Fornace Penna also served as a filming location for the television series “Il commissario Montalbano”. Work on the ancillary buildings is regarded as preparatory measures for the future public use of the complex.

Until around ten years ago, Sampieri was a small fishing village with a charming centre made up of a network of paved lanes along the Lungomare. The Museo della Pietra offers another way to explore the region’s history: it features a 45-minute tour of stone artefacts that were once used in local agriculture. This allows the coastal landscape, village character and craft-based past to become part of a varied holiday day.

Active days and local flavours

For cycling excursions, a cycle path connects Sampieri with Marina di Modica. Those who do not want to use the beach only for swimming can alternate between water sports and beach sports. The Mercato Campagna Amica offers a different focus: in Sampieri, it takes place every Thursday in summer from 17:00 to 21:00 on Via Miramare. Fresh agricultural produce and traditionally made products such as sauces, passata, preserves, pâtés, jams and marmalades are offered there directly by producers.
