Ribera between river landscapes, coast and history
Ribera combines impressive evidence of the past with nature experiences and the coastal resort of Seccagrande. The particularly striking Castello Poggiodiana stands on a rocky promontory above the valley of the Verdura River. The surviving remains include parts of the surrounding walls, a square corner bastion and a 25-metre-high cylindrical tower. The structure was built in the 9th century by the Saracens under the name Misilcassin, giving the landscape a distinctive historical character.
Gorges, rock tombs and special insights
The Gole del Lupo are located near Castello Poggiodiana. The Verdura River formed the gorges between citrus and fruit orchards. From Ribera, they can be reached by car or on foot via paths from the Verdura Valley. From there, you can enjoy a view of the sea and the Seccagrande stretch of coast. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Ribera can combine nature, landscapes and historical discoveries in a single travel concept without having to focus on just one type of excursion.
South of Ribera, in the Contrada Anguilla district, the Anguilla necropolis was discovered in 1982. It dates from the 13th century BC and comprises artificial rock tombs and chamber tombs. Some of the tombs are preceded by a dromos, a 1.5- to 5-metre-long access corridor. Due to their size and type, the tombs are considered unique in western Sicily.
Museums and churches in the townscape
The permanent Museo Etno-Antropologico is located in the Villa Comunale. It was established in 1989 thanks to the association “Ribera Verde”, which collected more than 4,000 objects from the agricultural, pastoral and craft cultures of this area. The traditional equipment on display includes wooden and iron ploughs, animal saddles, hoes, sickles for harvesting grain, as well as tools for tying sheaves and cleaning freshly threshed grain. The Villa Comunale itself contains rare plant species, centuries-old trees and flower-lined paths that are suitable for walks.
The churches also tell the story of the town: Chiesa Immacolata was built in 1686. The present Chiesa Madre was begun on 21 March 1751 and completed in 1760. Its high altar features an oil painting of the Madonna del Rosario by Provenzani.
Monte Sara and Seccagrande for active and relaxing days
Numerous plant species grow on Monte Sara, including the native dwarf palm. The equipped area has a pine and eucalyptus forest, seating for 480 people, ten fireplaces and a bocce court. Monte Sara is also suitable for mountain biking excursions. Seccagrande is the coastal resort belonging to the municipality of Ribera, with beaches. Numerous establishments line the Gagarin seafront promenade; they are suitable for afternoons and evenings by the sea.
Festivals with crafts, prayer and Sicilian specialities
Ribera’s Presepe Vivente takes place every year at Christmas in the Villa Comunale. Along its route, you can sample traditional specialities such as olives, cheese, oranges, sweets, fritters, ricotta and wine. Live demonstrations of carpentry, ceramics, shoemaking and blacksmithing round off the experience. The Festa Patronale di San Nicola is a traditional religious and cultural festival in Ribera featuring religious rites, processions and communal prayers. It also includes food stalls offering typical Sicilian dishes and local products.
When choosing your accommodation, you can consider Ribera itself, the Verdura landscape, Monte Sara or the coastal resort of Seccagrande as thematic focuses for your trip. In addition, the nature reserve is located at the mouth of the Platani River in the Province of Agrigento; it includes the Platani estuary and part of Borgo Bonsignore.
