Montevago combines distinctive landscapes with traces of past settlements, sacred architectural history and wine tourism. The Bosco Magaggiaro covers an extensive calcarenite plateau that slopes down towards the southeast and is crossed by deep fissures in the west, extending as far as the foothills of the Belice River. History in Specific Places

The archaeological area of Contrada Caliata lies on the S.S. 188, two kilometres from the old settlement of Montevago in the direction of Partanna. Remains of a Muslim farmstead from three different phases were identified there.

In Montevago’s historic centre, the buildings follow a planned orthogonal layout with rectangular blocks of houses and large inner courtyards. These courtyards are called „patii“ and give the townscape a distinctive architectural feature. The cathedral stands at the Piano della Matrice. It was built between the 17th and 19th centuries by the Gravina family and is dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul.

The church in Villaggio Bergamo is also dedicated to Peter and Paul. The village and the church were built and donated by the city of Bergamo after the 1968 earthquake in the Belice area. The Percorsi Visivi form an open-air museum trail that conveys what the town was like before the 1968 earthquake. In this way, commemorative culture and vivid historic places complement each other in different ways.

Landscape between Plateau and Caves

For days shaped by nature, the route from Montevago’s high plateau to the Fonte Sacra leads through a wild, rugged landscape with a broad valley and demanding paths between rocks and typical vegetation. The Grotta dei Personaggi lies a few kilometres from Montevago on the road to Menfi. It is a karst cave with an intricate system of passages, fissures, shafts and galleries.

Many of the caves of San Nicola have been cleaned and prepared so that visitors can explore them easily. Those travelling with children of different ages can plan such hands-on discoveries alongside longer days in the landscape, without limiting the holiday to just one type of experience.

Wine and Regional Character

At the XXVIII Festa del Vino di Montevago in 2025, wines from the Valle del Belìce were tasted.
