Another landscape feature is located in Contrada Bissana: there are two Maccalube, muddy springs that emit methane and carbon dioxide. They are called Abisso grande and Abisso piccolo. Together with Monte Cavallo, this site broadens the range to include nature observation and geological features without allowing Cianciana’s cultural themes to fade into the background.

Local food and customs

The Cece rosso di Cianciana is part of the local food culture. It has been grown in the municipality’s kitchen gardens since the post-war period, primarily for household consumption, and is not cultivated extensively. The feast of Santa Lucia on 13 December also includes the preparation of “cuccìa”, a sweetened soup made from boiled wheat. A red chickpea and a white chickpea were included in a bride’s trousseau as symbols of prosperity and good wishes.
