Holiday apartment in Caltabellotta: history, caves and rocky landscapes

Caltabellotta is a destination for you if you would like to combine historic sites, striking rocky landscapes and vibrant traditions. The medieval urban fabric is considered typical of a Mediterranean upland landscape and provides the setting for experiences ranging from prehistoric archaeological sites to seasonal festivals. When choosing a holiday apartment in Caltabellotta, you can therefore consider whether you are primarily interested in discovering culture, following a route through the landscape, or getting to know local customs and food.

Holiday apartment in Caltabellotta between the castle and the medieval urban fabric

Caltabellotta Castle was where Queen Sibilla was accommodated and where the Luna family preferred to reside at the time of the “Fall of Sciacca”. A staircase partly carved into the rock leads to the remains of the Norman castle. Another historic landmark is the Eremo di San Pellegrino: it was built in the 17th century and remodelled and extended in the 18th century by the hermit Stefano Montalbano.

Caves, rock-cut tombs and archaeological traces

The caves associated with the cult of the mythical San Pellegrino preserve frescoes, niches and furnishings, as well as two maiolica panels from 1579 and 1608. The Grotte di San Cono form a settlement complex inhabited since the Sican period and surrounded by numerous rock-cut tombs. At the eastern and western edges of Caltabellotta, the Sican necropolises comprise 22 prehistoric rock-cut tombs.

Archaeology and art at the Museo Civico

At the archaeological site of San Benedetto di Caltabellotta, the remains of an indigenous village dating from the 8th to the 7th century BC were discovered beneath the remains of a Greek settlement from the late 6th to the early 5th century BC. The Museo Civico “Palazzo della Signoria” houses archaeological finds from the Contrada San Benedetto area dating from the Early Bronze Age to the 3rd century BC. The museum also displays 33 works by Rizzuti made of wood, terracotta and plaster. The sacrificial altar of the god Kronos has a double staircase and was used during the Greek-Roman period.

A route through the settlement centre and rocky landscape

For active days, one route offers several clearly distinguishable landmarks: it passes the oldest settlement centre, Terravecchia, in Caltabellotta, crosses the Piano della Matrice amid an impressive rocky landscape, and climbs uphill to the Chiesa Madre of Caltabellotta. If you are planning to use a holiday apartment as a base for days with different rhythms, these historic and scenic highlights can help determine your personal selection of experiences.

Festivals and specialities from Caltabellotta

The Feast of the Madonna dei Miracoli takes place on the last Sunday in July and traditionally includes the faithful presenting gold. The festival includes a procession on Saturday carrying the donated gold to the Church of Sant’Agostino, the ceremony of dressing the statue, and another procession on Sunday. Caltabellotta is also associated with a lively nativity play in the caves during the Christmas season; the tradition is preserved and renewed every year. At Easter, Froscia is prepared in Caltabellotta, a dish made with eggs, ricotta, bread, cheese, asparagus and lemon balm. Cuddureddi are Christmas pastries filled with fig jam.
