Archaeology and Art at the Antiquarium

An important cultural point of interest is the “Di Pisa Guardì” Antiquarium. It is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; it is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. In the first room, alongside a large archaeological section, you can see a selection of works by Michele Caltagirone (Quarantino), the historian Gaetano Di Giovanni and the distinguished educator Giovanni Agostino De Cosmi.

The oldest archaeological evidence represented in the Antiquarium comes from Monte Roveto and dates back to the Late Neolithic. The collection also includes Attic pottery from the 5th century BC, considered to be of exceptionally high quality. At the Santa Croce-Fontana di Paolo archaeological site, three large cisterns containing material from the 6th to the 5th century BC were excavated. Such sites give a trip to Casteltermini a distinct cultural and historical focus.

Historic Centre with Notable Buildings

Casteltermini was founded on 5 April 1629 on the Chiuddia fief by Baron Gian Vincenzo Maria Termini e Ferreri. The historic centre was shaped by a large square with the palace of the town’s founder and by a long street. Numerous residential buildings, aristocratic residences and churches were built there. At the end of Corso Umberto I, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe stands at the top of a staircase – a specific destination for anyone who prefers to discover local history in the townscape rather than only in exhibitions.

Mountain Landscapes and Industrial Archaeology

Outside the centre, the interplay between landscape and history continues. The Eremo di Santa Croce is located about three kilometres from the town centre, amid the green mountain landscape of the Province of Agrigento. The Cozzo Disi mine is also nearby, between Casteltermini and Campofranco on State Road 189 in the Platani Valley.

The Cozzo Disi Mining Museum was established by Sicilian Regional Law No. 17 of 15 May 1991 and is a remarkable example of industrial archaeology. The cultural spectrum therefore extends from Late Neolithic evidence and ancient pottery to Sicily’s industrial past.
