San Gemiliano between religious architecture and prehistory

About five kilometres north of Sestu, the Church of San Gemiliano stands in open countryside. It has a rectangular floor plan with two adjoining naves, separate entrances and independent apses. This should be distinguished from the prehistoric village of San Gemiliano, which consists of numerous huts. It dates from the late Neolithic period of the Ozieri culture through to the second Copper Age of the Monte Claro culture.

A rural house of the Campidano

Casa Ofelia was built in 1901 by Giuseppe Marras. The building is a traditional rural house of the Campidano made of mud bricks known as “ladiri”. Its characteristic L-shaped layout follows the pattern of a Campidanese courtyard house. Casa Ofelia thus adds an example of regional residential and architectural heritage to the religious and prehistoric themes.

Prehistoric traces in Sestu

The archaeological sites also reach far back into the past. Craviole Paderi is a significant prehistoric site in the Sestu area; finds from the Bonnanaro culture of the Early Bronze Age were discovered there. A Punic-Roman necropolis is located on Corso Italia in Sestu, where household pottery from the 3rd century BC was found. These two sites give the history of the town chronological depth without limiting it to a single era.

Festival and landscape

The cultural calendar includes the festival in honour of San Gemiliano. It is celebrated from 2 September to 7 September with numerous religious and civic events. Stani Saliu offers a completely different landscape impression: at maximum water level, the endorheic depression has a water surface of around 30,000 m². The Stani Saliu biotope is considered one of the few of its kind still preserved in the Mediterranean region.
