Mining History of Su Suergiu

The Su Suergiu Mine operated between the 19th and 20th centuries and was one of Europe’s most important antimony production centres for decades. The Su Suergiu Mine complex includes an Art Nouveau administrative building, a foundry, tunnels, furnaces and workers’ housing; together, they form a valuable industrial heritage site.

The Su Suergiu Mining Village brings together Villasalto’s industrial and social history and lies in the green valley of the Rio Sessini. The “Su Sergiu” Industrial Archaeological Museum displays materials and equipment that also illustrate the lives of the miners. The museum is housed in one of the buildings in the complex, which consists of several buildings.

Faith and Regional Connections

The Sanctuary of Santa Barbara was elevated to the status of a pilgrimage church on 5 April 2015 by Arrigo Miglio, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Cagliari. It has enjoyed particular veneration for centuries; for its feast day on the first Sunday, Monday or Tuesday in June, worshippers come to Villasalto from Gerrei, Trexenta, Marmilla, Campidano, Sarrabus, Barbagia, Goceano, Logudoro and Ogliastra.

Through the Landscape on Ancient Trails

The Miners’ Trail connects the Su Suergiu Mine with Armungia and follows a mule track. It also runs along old paths between gardens and vineyards and offers beautiful panoramas over the surrounding landscape; the route takes about 40 minutes.

The Villasalto–Caboni Trail (C 402) begins in the “sa Mitza ‘e Caboni” district of Villasalto, is easy to walk and leads downhill to the Caboni spring. It is 800 metres long; the walking time is 15 minutes.

The Su Suergiu Mine–Punta Pardu Trail (C 401) passes through a habitat with rich flora and fauna and offers beautiful views of the valley below.

Panoramas and Springs

The Monte Gènis panoramic viewpoint lies at 880 metres above sea level and offers an especially far-reaching view over the whole of Gerrei, Sarcidano and Barbagia di Seulo. The connecting trail along the Si-CAI Z26 ridge is designated C-400-A.

The Villasalto forest district has a high number of abundant springs throughout the year. Together with the rich flora and fauna along C 401, this abundance of water broadens the landscape perspective beyond mining and viewpoints.
