It was probably built in the Late Bronze Age between 1350 and 1150 BC; the site was already in use in the Middle Bronze Age between 1800 and 1350 BC. Centro Do.S.A. is housed in a farm building constructed at the end of the 19th century. Miniera Corti Rosas is part of Sardinia’s UNESCO-recognised Geomining, Historical and Environmental Park.

The former Miniera Corti Rosas antimony mine preserves the remains of a processing plant, a flotation plant and a building for the electric generator, as well as buildings from the former accommodation and residential buildings. From Ballao, you can reach the mine via the road to Escalaplano; the turn-off is shortly after the bridge over the Flumendosa.

Religious Festivals and Community Traditions

The Festa di Santa Maria Nuraxi is also known as Santa Maria Cleofe and is celebrated in Ballao on Easter Monday with a religious procession to a Byzantine rural church, a communal lunch, and traditional singing and dancing. The chapel is located approximately 4 km from the town centre in the mountainous area on the border with the municipality of Silius.

Su Fogadoni is celebrated on 16 January in honour of Saint Anthony the Abbot with a large bonfire. The celebrations include singing and dancing, red wine, cooked broad beans and traditional sweet treats.
