Holiday apartment in Tratalias: Festivals, History and Nature

Tratalias combines a rich local history with lively festival traditions, artisan culture and experiences in Monte Pranu Park. The town developed opposite the Gulf of Palmas. Key landmarks include the former cathedral of Santa Maria di Monserrato, the Casa Spagnola with the Museo del territorio trataliese and the Nuragic complex of Is Meurras. Culture enthusiasts will find several historical points of interest in Tratalias, from the former place of worship and the museum to the Nuragic complex.

History between the cathedral and the abandoned village

The former cathedral of Santa Maria di Monserrato was built between 1213 and 1282. From 1218 to 1503, it was the seat of the Diocese of Sulci. The original village is also part of the historical landscape: it was abandoned in the 1980s after seepage from the artificial lake of Monte Pranu made the houses unusable. The abandonment of the village therefore belongs to a later phase of the town’s history. Monte Pranu appears in two contexts: as an artificial lake in the history of the settlement and as the name of the park with signposted paths.

Sa Festa Manna and Tratalias traditions

Sa Festa Manna takes place every year during the week that includes Ascension Sunday. A festively decorated tractor is used in the procession. On the Thursday before Ascension Day, the residents of Tratalias also organise the return of the image of the Virgin Mary from Iglesias to the town. Tratalias cuisine is also associated with this occasion, including snails in sauce. The festival week combines the return from Iglesias with the Thursday before Ascension Day and with a culinary connection to Tratalias. The return and the procession take place at different moments during the same festival week. The relevant timeframe is therefore the week around Ascension Day, not only the day of the procession.

Museums, archaeology and crafts

The Museo del territorio trataliese is located in the Casa Spagnola. The cart used in the Ascension procession of the Virgin of Monserrato is kept there. Another highlight is the Nuragic complex of Is Meurras. It includes an enclosed village and a giants’ tomb and is considered the most important archaeological complex in Tratalias. In the workshops behind the cathedral, visitors can observe artisans at work first-hand. The observation takes place behind the cathedral and thus remains connected to this historical landmark.

Active days in Monte Pranu Park

The natural oasis of Monte Pranu Park offers a different perspective on Tratalias. Mountain biking is possible on signposted paths, and horse-riding excursions are also available. In Monte Pranu Park, two different forms of activity are available for planning your day: mountain biking on signposted paths and horse-riding excursions. The signage provides a practical reference when planning a mountain-bike ride. The horse-riding excursions complement mountain biking as a second active option in Monte Pranu Park.
